Should Mal Name His Pistol?

We all know that Jayne's favorite gun is Vera. Many people, myself included name their weapons. I have a knife, named Rasputin, that I took to Iraq with me, and naming your weapons takes on an almost religious significance to people once they've been in a war. So should Mal name his pistol? Its really the only one we ever see him use. Any ideas on names people?

Well, he already named the ship Serenity, so that's out. Maybe he'd name it Shadow, as that's where he's from.

But for me personally, I figure he should name his pistol Firefly.

I'm sure Joss could could conjure up some reason as to why that'd be personal for Mal...

Oh, I dunno about the whole pistol naming thing for Mal. Jayne is one thing; he gets a charge out of popping someone in the line of profit (and sometimes he just likes whackin 'em). For him to name his guns is part and parcel of the glee with whch he plies his trade.

By contrast, Nathan's portrayal of Mal conveys (to my eyes anyway) a distinct sense of regret for the lives he takes (not necessarily having to do with the lives themselves, mind you, since many of them have clearly been misspent, and have brought them to a place where they mean to do him harm...just the necessity of being the one who has to deliver their Special Bullets). I don't think Mal approaches gun-play with the sort of elan which Jayne displays, and as such I don't think he would personalize and identify with the instrument in the same way.

Now, during the war, when he was full of piss and vinegar and the Spirit (not necessarly in that order), he probably would have come up with some name for his piece ("there are many like it, but this one is mine!"). I'd go with some girlfriend's name.

Yeah, he should name it "The Lizard King". What? Ohhh, you meant his revolver! Besides, 'TLK' is already taken by Wash for his 'pistol'...

How about "The Peacemaker"? Nah. That's another 'pistol' name. Let me palm my meds next hour and get back to you on this one...
