FOX killed the show by not promoting it during 2weeks and a half *cries*

"Providence" started the evening for NBC with a 7.1/12. CBS took second with "48 Hours Investigates," 6.4/11. ABC was third with a repeat of "America's Funniest Home Videos," while FOX's lame-duck "Firefly" managed only a 2.4/4.

Its all about selling useless crap to morons. I hope they can figure out a way to produce this show for some other venue. But if they don't then I can go back to being all snobby and superior when I say "I don't watch TV"

Yes... business is about selling things. To people. WHo are generally not as intelligent as probably either of us are.

Unfortunately, that's the nature of the game. People don't like Firefly. /shrug. That makes it a lousy thing to keep on the air. Maybe Fox should have promoted it more. I, for one, didn't see a single promotion during any of the other Fox shows I watch (24, The Simspons, and I'll occasionally be tuned to Fox News). Then again, maybe they were wondering what their baseline was. A sort of "If we put no effort into this, what can we get out of it? How many loyal Firefly fans do we actually have?" We'll have to see how they promote Objects in Space.

The brightest side I can find is that maybe this will piss Joss off, and he'll decide "Screw network TV and Fox" and begin producing stuff for HBO, where he'll have neat things like total creative freedom.

Brilliant. If you happen to have premium channels, which I don't.

Perhaps this isn't as bad as we think, I know I'm being way too optimistic, but I think this is just merely a result of not being shown for two weeks. John Doe, which also wasn't shown for two weeks, had its worst ratings ever I believe, dropping from a 4.1 to 3.6. So maybe in that context its not so bad?

It would certainly help if the would advertise it more.

I was pissed because I was watching fox before FF came on and I saw a comercial for the syndicated run of that 70's show that was going to be on at 11:30 and then on the next break simpsons at around 12, YET not one did I see and add for the show that was going to be on next, firefly

Its as bad as the way the network treats futurama!

Yet I never seem to miss a comercial for fox's ultra conservative "reporter" Bill O'Riley

My favorite is when I see a commercial for an "upcoming" episode of a show I just finished watching, and it's the same episode that was just on..same time same date. ACK!!

GORRAMM IT!! Please make them advertise this show...someone...anyone...please....I will beg if I have to, I will beg if I dont have to if it will help.

LONG LIVE FIREFLY!!!

I've got a really BAD feeling right now. Fox does NOT have a good track record with marginally performing shows. My all-time favorite show, Brimstone, was cancelled 13 episodes into the run and that show had a pretty steady 3.7 towards the last few episodes. Even an extensive, well-coordinated letter-writing campaign failed to save the show. A second case in point was Harsh Realm. I had an opportunity to see the unaired 6 episodes and each steadily got better once you bought-into the premise. Neither show had an opportunity to find an audience and that track record goes strongly against Firefly.

I think Firefly is great and it is one of the few shows I make any effort to watch (Buffy, Angel, and 24 are others). But I have 2 young boys and sometimes I cannot get to watch my "don't miss" shows unless I tape them for playback later. Isn't the main demographic this show is targeting OUT having fun on Friday nights? This demographic is probably recording the show and playing back later. Hell, the massive Tivo sign-ups are proof of this.

Just one last thing, just who the blazes are the Nielsens anyway?

A couple thousand people have a little device hooked
up to their TV that records what they watch. Yes,
just a couple thousand. It's come under fire for
this, potentially being too small a statistical
sample. For the major networks, however, it is
pretty accurate, except...

What really blows is that none of these devices are
on college campuses. They don't track student populations,
which account for huge percentages of Firefly/Babylon
5/Farscape audiences.

What's going to kill Firefly will be the show that replaces it while Firefly is on hiatus. And don't start panicing if the numbers initially start off high. Watch the drops from week to week. Also watch what John Doe does with a new lead-in. If its number rises, there could be problems. If John Doe also falls, it could bode well for a Firefly return. Of course, this being big network television, they'll probably cancel all the shows and start running episodes of "When COPS attack" or something equally intelligent. It's not over until the cancellation notice (and even then it might mean the show is only over with FOX). Peddling to other channels might be a very good idea.

Some of us also have a little box attached to our system called TiVO. Unfortunately, a show like Firefly, as well as Buffy and the like, aren't really shows families that would be considered "Nielsen Families" would watch. That was why Brisco County died. It was EXTREMELY popular, but the problem is its main viewership was college students in dorms, and Nielsen doesn't count that, BUT, the group that would watch these shows is the group marketers want. Ain't that fun?

Now, I have heard a rumor that Nielsen is working on a way to gather taping info from TiVo as well, since TiVO already does.

Also, remember, last nite was also a big SHOPPING NITE! :)

I don't know if this is what it was like back then but apparently there are now nielsen boxes in college dorms. More than a few people have commented on the TWOP forums (and I believe on Usenet) that they had nielsen boxes when they were in college.

The good news is, Nielsen is monitoring Tivos now.

http://news.com.com/2100-1040-948580.html

The other good news is, we watched it twice in our household. :)

The bad news is it doesn't appear that Nielsen is giving much weight to the Tivo data yet. I recall reading at one point that Firefly was in the top 3 of shows that Tivo owners had in their wishlists.

Which along with 4 million viewers keeps a show alive. :(

You know, I wouldn't have even know that Firefly was going to be ON this week if it weren't for this site (and AICN)...

... just last week the news was EVERYWHERE that Firefly was going on hiatus. SO, the fact that it hadn't been on for two weeks anyhow translated to me (and in my mind - EVERYBODY ELSE) that the show was indeed already on hiatus.

I had no idea that it was going to be shown this week until I read it here on Thursday! What does Fox EXPECT the ratings to do?

Man, that is so aggraviating! I love this show and Fox has absolutley run it into the ground. Nothing but bad press all the way.

I feel so bad for Joss...

I just had a thought, I wonder if another reason that the ratings were down on Friday (besides the two week hiatus and no adverts) was the fact that Steven Spielberg's mega-billion dollar mini-series, Taken, is on everynight for two weeks for like 2 hours a night. Unfortunately it could be biting into the tiny pool of Sci-fi viewers that are Nielsen families. Personally I watched one episode and was bored stiff, but who knows?

I'd just like to say, I heard from a rather confidential source that Firefly IS going to a new timeslot. I can't verify the veracity of the statement but I believe it to be true.

Two hours? Heck, I think SciFi is showing each installment three times a night (at 8:00, 10:00, and 12:00) in prime time, and once or twice the subsequent day. I have a very busy TiVo, and it's managed to find a time slot to record each of the five episodes of "Taken" broadcast thus far.

For two weeks, SciFi has become the "all 'Taken,' all the time" network.

At least "Taken" is watchable. It's not perfect, but I've found it to be pretty entertaining. I never cared for "The X-Files" because it never seemed very clear where the whole alien storyline was going, but "Taken" seems to have been able to keep the story fairly transparent while still keeping its secrets. And the epic scale-- we've gone from World War II to the Reagan administration in five installments-- is something I don't think I've seen before in science fiction TV.

Now, if SciFi can keep "Children of Dune" from being the same sort of boring claptrap that their "Dune" mini was a year ago, they'll be doing well.

As much as I'd like to see fresh new episodes it would really make a lot of sense to start over on a new night, show the orignal pilot and all the episodes in the correct order. I just hope there's not a lot of pressure to change the show to attract more viewers. Quality art creates its own audience. Pandering to the masses just wastes real talent.

I don't think Whedon will allow the network to ass-rape his vision. Firefly is his baby, and I get the impression he'll do most anything to preserve its intregrity.

I don't get HBO either, but if Firfly was on a premium channel, atleast it would be on. I could buy the DVD set at the end of the season.

Yeah, and I also thing it would be good for Fox to start over at a new timeslot by showwing the pilot. It'd be eiser for me to get m friends into it. By the way, I've gotten two new firefly fans this week...that's something, atleast. It wasn't hard - I just showed them the pilot and told them what time it comes on.
