I would like to get input from anyone that can offer any information about 'Earth that was' as the firefly universe portrays it. I can't watch the dvds right now and my reading of fanfics has muddied my memory. What does the first season have to say about earth that was?

Thanks for you input.

Pretty much nothing except that it "was". . .and Simon indicates that folks are still aware of Earth's history. (his mention of the Egyptians)

Yeah, they seem to leave it at the fact that these people that we know did come from earth originally, that they HAD to explore and terra form new worlds because "Earth that Was" could no longer support life, but that's the extent.

Honestly, if I had to hazard a guess as to why Joss left the end days of "Earth that Was" as such a mystery, I would guess that he didn't want all of those cutesy moments that would almost have to be included if the crew were constantsly making reference to "ancient history" our present day. Talking about how Pauly Shore became the unquestioned ruler of the world in a bloodless coup or some other crap like that. I don't know, that's what I would figure.

TENTHCREWMEMBER

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=4&t=6766

is the thread with an explaination/translation of the "shadow puppet feature" in 'Heart of Gold'. It also has a post with a hypothetical backstory.

Hope this helps!

I would imagine that the knowledge of Earth-That-Was is available, just not widely known. Much like the Renaissance period. Students and fans of history will know the details, but everyday schmoe won't know anything, or will have it all mystified and confused. And there is a the matter of 500 years in the future, and then they left the world, but I don't think they left it in a rush before the world blew up. So a lot got left, but not everything.
