Simon, the resident elitist (Inara too but... anyho') makes a statement about the drink 'mudders milk' in Jayne's Town.

It goes something like: "The Egyptians used alcohol to numb Pyramid slaves into working..." something like that.

But...

We know now that the Pyramids were built by well paid, honoured, and skilled artisans who lived a comparitively rich life as an upper class in Egyptian society.

Course, Simon's statement is still terrifically in character. He's just a putz sometimes eh?

Actually, he made the comment that the ancient form of beer gave nutrition to the slaves and the alcohol in it kept them from revolting, because they were, y'know, drunk.

Quite welcome. Though I was unaware of the recent discoveries about the builder's of the pyramids. I knew a little about them using highly skilled craftsmen, but thought there must have been slave labor involved in a project that huge.

Well, the year round inhabitants of the building sites for the Egyptian pyramids were highly trained and skilled but the seasonal workers were not necessarily so.

IIRC, there is evidence that the seasonal workers were brought in during the agricultural off-season, so to speak, post-harvest, pre-planting, when food could be somewhat scarce in the villages and the Pharoah's granaries were still well-stocked. Apart from providing for the Pharoah's well-being in the afterlife and by extension the continued fertility of the land of Egypt, the pyramid projects appeared to function as a cross between a civilian draft and the dole. I have not heard of contemporary Egytpian reports that the work on the pyramids was considered worthy of revolt but then the written records were produced by members of the establishment.

In light of all of which, yes, Simon paints them all with an overbroad and elitist brush.

Saw a special on Discovery about the builders and where they were buried. In their tombs they found tons of beer jugs.

Yo Ghoul! Sorry, what makes Inara elitist ezackly? She does most of her business with the elite, that's for sure, but if that made you an elitist, maids and butlers would all be eating steak. Seems to me one of Inara's strengths personally and professionally is her ability to withold judgements. When she does judge another person, as I recall, it is always a failing of character. Am I wrong?

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

And here I thought I was an elitist because I'm better than everyone else. Turns out it's because I eat steak. Wow.

He meant here that if maids and butlers were elitist, and chose only to work with the elite, the employers would feed them steak all the time, because they would be in such a position of wealth to do so.

At least I think that's what is meant.

The idea that slaves built the pyramids is an older interpretation of history that was accepted truth until recently. That interpretation owes a lot to the Hebrew Bible which has the Hebrews as slaves working on the pharoahs building projects. Scholars have recently started questioning whether or not the Hebrew Bible is accurate because no one has found any non-Biblical supporting evidence that the ancient Hebrews were slaves.

I don't think that Simon was being elitist in his comments. I think that he was just observing reality where alcohol can be used to sedate an oppressed population.

^^^ The Bible isn't accurate on anything it seems. I should agree with your obviously insightful comment. Personally, I tend to blame Industrial Age Empirialists who see the world as one big pyramid (and write thier history books to match thier world view)... if you get me.

Not an "Elitist" but one of the Elite of Society. That is, the truly rich.

And I will back up on this, I think I'm wrong and you're right. Inara works for a living... Simon never did.

That's usually a great way to figure out who is a member of the elite and who isn't.

lol! Nice one! It's a sign of Ed's education (comic books and Star Wars) but having said that I've been a HUGE fan of Ben Edlund since the good ole days of the Tick. Can't tell ya how excited I was to see his name in the Firefly writing credits. My bones were a tickled!

^^^ hey, talk about pointing out the real!

Well, sure, but Simon comes from an elite family. He didn't become one of the elite by working as a surgeon.

Doctor is the job for elite boys if not lawyer or broker. You know, the elite aren't kings sitting on mounds of gold, they are actual people with actual lives. If you gained elite status through work you're, what? Nouveau riche? Bourgeois?
