Don't be put off by the negative tone of the title, this is the best piece of writing I've seen yet on why Firefly matters. Please check it out. Long live Firefly!!

Thanks for posting this. I liked the whole thing, put most particularly the part about the little bit of business at the end of "The Train Job."

Any pro-Firefly article that also gives props to Bill Hicks is pure gold in my book.

Hicks was brilliant and fearless. Check out his comedy albums and specials if you haven't yet. It's been eight years since Hicks' death and only one project that I know of has come close to Hicks' fearlessness: David Cross' brand new double album "Shut Up, You F*cking Baby" (put out by Sub Pop, oddly enough).

Thanks to everybody who checked out my post. The perceived negative tone was obviously not intended, but the somewhat flaky folks on the official Fox Firefly board have assured me that the show is fine and will in fact live forever.

As I briefly mentioned in my post, Preacher by Garth Ennis is a comic series that any fan of Bill Hicks is sure to appreciate. Bill actually makes an appearance later in the series, as a flashback -- Jessie, the main character, reveals that it was after seeing a Bill Hicks performance that he grew the stones to take control of his life and set the events of the story in motion. It's published by Vertigo and the whole story is available in nine volumes. I won't lie to you, buying the whole thing would be expensive, but if there's a comic shop in your area swing by and lay down the $20 for volume one. I can almost guarantee you won't be disappointed.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

... and that is why I'll be sorely disappointed if Firefly is cancelled. You have to realize that I *never* watch TV. With a neurologically compromised child and hubby with serious autoimmune disease, I frankly don't have the time. But there is something about Firefly that I HAVE to sit down and watch, and yes, I believe it is the truely heroic aspect of Malcom Reynolds. He's seen the worst. He's probably DONE the worst. But he's still pointed in the direction of good.

I wish they'd give ME on of those Nielsen boxes!

Good article - brought up some fine points that I can identify with strongly. That quote from The Train Job is what caught my attention the first show, and that attitude is what has held me to it.

The points made in that article are exactly why I like John Wayne in all his cheesy goodness. My wife (and most other people) just don't seem to *get* John Wayne. I'm happy someone else seems to.

Malcom as a hero?

I always saw him as a pathological villan bent on getting his friends and loved ones killed over some false sense of morality....but I guess that is what passes for hero these days. :)

Anyway I liked that article...it melded well with my ideas of what the show is about; morality in a godless universe.
