NERVOUSPETE

Just had a thought!

About the (Brrr) Blue-Hand Men (Sweet Jesus, no!)... could it be that they are actually killing with their minds? And that the little sinister tube they hold up is either...

A: Some sort of device to focus their fearfully destructive brain waves?

B: A device to protect themselves from their own powers?

C: A bit of plastic to fool any non-dead non-Blue Hand companions that it is hi-tech doing this rather than sinister brain waves.

Or of course it could be the device doing the killing, in which case the Blue Hand men must be different from everyone else in the brain and body dept. for not being affected. But is River invulnerable to it too? Are the Blue Hand Men members of an early academy? Is River the result of a dissatifaction with the device killer, the desire to create an assassin who WON'T EVEN NEED IT?

All questions for idle speculation on the bus, indeed.

Pete

P.S: Sorry if this has occured to almost everybody out there already. Which it almost certainly has.

i like this one, but could also see it as something to protect them from someone like river, it being like a seditive for super genious and killer for the normal. cant see bluesun makeing a tool that isnt multipourpose

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. I think it might be simpler than that. Probably something that focuses sonic waves in a concentrated and destrutive area effect. I'm thinking it's like the HoBs' (Hands of Blues') sidearm (much like a government agent or police officers). Powerful enough to literally vibrate the innards of its targets to the point of causing extreme hemmhoraging and death.

Does Blue Sun sponser the Blue Man Group?

The problem with the sidearm theory is how inefficient and outrageously messy the whole operation is. I think the Blue Hands would be able to come up with a faster, quieter, and above all cleaner way to merely kill someone.

I like the focus/brain killing theory. Nicely explains how our boys aren't affected by the thingy.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

I'm too lazy to go back and read through the archived threads so I'm not sure if this has been brought up already (probably ).

Three bits of evidence: the nature of the death/injuries, the look of the device, the blue hand coverings. It looks like the blood started to come out of the body using the path of least resistance. Almost as if there were a severe pressure differential between the body and the surrounding fluid. The device looks like it is a transmitter, a broadcaster that works on a frequency that is not in the visual range. The only visible differences between the blue hands guys and their victims are the blue hand coverings. It must be something about the blue hand coverings that protect them.

I got to thinking that perhaps the device stimulated nerve endings with incorrect sensory information, the nerves then passed this data to the brain and the body is tricked into reacting as if there was a pressure differential, when in fact there was not. The hands and the feet have a huge number of nerve endings. The gloves block the emission from reaching the hands of the bad guys.

Just thinking out loud and expecting all sorts of problems with this theory since it's been many many years since I had a class where we discussed the nervous system.

From Ariel (after Simon scans River)

SIMON
You know, ah, you know how you get
scared or worried or nervous, but
you don't want to be scared or
worried or nervous, so you push it
to the back of your mind? You
try not to think about it.
(cut to JAYNE's unreadable face)
Your amygdala is what lets you do that.
It's like a filter in your brain that
keeps your feelings in check.

Maybe these Blue Hands guys have stripped Amygdala's like River and the device simply overloads the victim's filter. I.E. causes the victim to have such scary thoughts their mind can't take it and it blows. But since the Blue Hands guys have no filter the thoughts go in one ear and out the other.

Now what that scary thought may be, I haven't a clue, but it might involve Wacko Jacko and Bubbles

What does the RFP look like for this thing?
"We want a device which will kill (slow is fine) all the inhabitants of a room other then those we make specifically immune. It should appear to be a death from natural causes. The device will need to be handheld and easily concealable."

Weird. A grenade will kill a roomful of people, but the user needs to be somewhere else to use it. A gun will kill a roomful probably just as quickly but needs to be individually aimed. Why the specific need for this device.

I don't buy the 'its a diversion' idea. When the HOB uses it he is not drawing attention to it, just the opposite really.

People seem to like the idea that River was being designed to be an assassin. I still don't believe they are that rare a commodity. Cheaper to just make expendable ones.

Thank You Kindly.

On the idea of River being made into an assasain: it is, as Corwyn points out, cheaper to hire expendable ones. Why go to the effort?

If we go back to what we know: that River is a genius, that her amygdala has been stripped *leaving her open to feeling everything, "because she can't not"*, and that she appears to be psychic (her interaction with Ruby and the Patron in "Safe" is the most prime evidence of this) we might jump to the conclusion that Blue Sun/the Government were trying to create psychics.
Why?
My instinctive answer is, "Don't look at me, I don't write this stuff!"
But creatively - perhaps to gain knowledge of and access to information that will help (Blue Sun) achieve their goals (??) If we assume that River's comment "I can kill you with my brain" is fact, then perhaps this ability is a side effect of the repeated surgery to make her psychic, or vice-versa...

Any other ideas?

Follow the money trail. What use would Blue Sun have for highly intelligent people who feel everything? In other words, the ultimate intuitors. Market researchers! They know exactly what you want to buy because your desires have been intuited by their crack team of amygdala-stripped experts!!

(Okay. That was a bit tongue in cheek ).

Is there anyone out there with a background in medicine/trauma? I'm curious about the nature of the blood loss that the victims of the Blue Hands exhibit. Would internal hemorrhaging lead to that specific pattern of blood flow? Is there anything that you have seen in real life that causes blood to flow from the eyes, nose, ears, and fingertips? It looks to me like all the blood is being sucked out of the victims through the easiest path possible (the places in the body that are interfaces between skin and cartilage, cavity openings, etc.). This looks like a classic case of potential differences, whether electrical or fluid (fluids flow from high to low pressure). I just like the idea that the device in question has more of a scientific basis rather than just saying that the Blue Hands guys used their minds to cause internal hemorrhaging.

Can you tell I'm having a hard time giving up on this pet theory?

The 'I can kill you with my brain' line is a goof on Jayne. Whether it is true that River can kill people with her brain, SHE doesn't believe it. If she did, why would she shot those three guys in WS, or why wouldn't she do something similar to Early?

River is a brat; that line is part of that.

Plus can you imagine killing someone with your brain, and feeling all of that, and not being able to put it out of your mind? As it is, she can't watch when she kills people (also not the best trait for an assassin by the way :-)

Thank You Kindly.
