Well, it was. But now the question remains........How did Mal ( and Zoe ) know of Reavers? Jayne knew OF them, of course, but not to the extent that Capt did. So, did he learn of Reavers in the 6 odd yrs since the war? Or did he know of them prior ? And what about River ? She seems to know what's up. Oh yeah, Zoe seems to have been clued in as well. Not so much her husband - Wssh, but still......she knew. Even Book had his 'druthers as to what Reavers were/ are. Seems that if Book were a super secret undercover dude......he'd know a small bit 'o Reavers. Or not. He's crafty that way.

I just assumed that Mal & Zoe had been out on the rim for six years (since the war) and they've seen the damage, and heard the stories...
with enough evidence so that they were certain the stories were not myths.
Book & the green Alliance Captain thought the stories were myths...
But Jayne knew they weren't (of course maybe his family lives out on the rim, where people know the truth of Reavers).

and of course Simon was raised all protected and had never heard of them...
while River could read the fear in the minds of the others, or maybe even read the chaos and insanity on the Reaver ship....

Just me guessing of course.

Bar stories. Sitten around, havin a drink with your fellow soilders, or buddies or whatever and somebody gets to talkin, then someone else adds their 2 cents. Lot of its probably folk lore, but enough of it has gotta be true to get Zoe so freaked out about it.

I don't think there was a Reavers 101 night class at the local community collage if thats what you mean.

Just basic word of mouth is all were talkin about here.

You have to think that the Reavers would have a colony, or village or something dirt-side. They would need someplace to base out of I guess, perhaps they have plundered and pillaged some of those out of the way colonies.

I couldn't find 'Reavers' on www.snopes.com. The most they could come up with was roofers and Joan Rivers.

Zoe and Mal are characters that have obviously seen it all. They've seen the arse end of the universe after the war finished and as stated in the pilot - they go wherever the job takes them... That being some of the border planets where the reavers dwell.

Jayne, although he may have come across them before, strikes me as the sort of character who would take Mal's word anyway and the rumours alone of what they do is enough for him to believe. Like he says he aint going anywhere near reavers and maybe he hasn't but he doesn't need to. He believes in the strength of the fables and stories surrounding them.

As for the others well Simon mentions that he's heard campfire stories, nothing concrete, but enough to make you aware. That so, then it stands to reason River would have been exposed to some of these tales aswell.

Book on the other hand is a character who's past is shrouded in mystery, and clearly for a shepherd, we are led to believe from others' reactions, that he is vastly more knowledgeable about the verse than regular shepherds are; so in his history he may well have crossed paths with reavers .

As for the rest well the fear in Zoe and Mal's face is enough for them to see just how severe they are and therefore believe.

Happy to see you! It is the SPIRIT of the post that counts. Now let's all put our collages on display at the local college. Will this count towards our grade?

If I were to guess, I'd say the Reavers are connected to River somehow, which would explain the subtle wordplay similarity of River-Reaver.

What if the Reavers are previous psi ops experiments gone wrong by the Alliance? River could then conceivably be an upgraded model of what the Reavers were originally intended to be.

If the Reavers have some kind of psychic abilities like River, that would also explain why their ship cruised by Serenity, then went to the trouble of circling around for them. Possibly, they sensed her presense on Serenity, and either felt attracted or threatened by it.

As for how Mal knew about them, maybe they were used against the browncoats during the waning days of the war, and Mal remembers the horror that ensued.

If I were to fit Book in this scenario somehow, I'd guess he's the mad doctor that created the Reavers in the first place. In his subsequent guilt, he turned to religion to help purge himself of that sin.

Which brings me back to the Reavers. The ones on the rim now are either the rejects that got away, or they're working for the Alliance, terrorizing people on the Rim, in order to keep them in line.

What if they aren't the boogey men that people are being told, but are in fact the beginning of resistance against the Alliance? Could River be the messiah they're looking for?

Oh well, it's fun to speculate.

P.S. - I almost forgot, hi, this is my first post here.

Mmmm-a-licious and Ebo:

I was only poking fun. If this misspell had been 'colledge' or 'colege', et cetera, I'd've never said a peep. But 'collage' has a meaning all its own. The juxtaposition of 'community collage' got me thinking about a page on FFFn (maybe) where everyone could post a thumbnail of themself, and then they could be stitched together like a Browncoat crazy-quilt.

I don't know who the artist is, but I've seen portraits of famous folk made from collages of much smaller pictures of the same person. Have y'all seen these? How cool would it be to have a picture of Serenity, made up of thumbnails of all her fans?

So, actually, semi-serious about the community collage thing. Again, good idea, Ebo (e'en if it twas unintentional)...

Respectfully,

zoid

Dearest RespectfulZoid,

Always a pleasure to read your take on things. A photo collage of the FFF community would not go amiss....You should talk to Haken about it. (Don't be afraid of him, he makes everybody cry. He's like a monster.)

Hyperion is my bible, so much so that my user name is The Shrike on every message board I post on. In my lifetime, I hope to see a trilogy of films based on the books. Apparently, Martin Scorcese is interested in adapting it.

I'm a hard core sci fi/fantasy fan, besides Simmons, I revere Greg Bears Forge Of God, Anvil Of Stars, and Moving Mars. Other works I enjoyed are Nivens Ringworld, and Brins uplift series. In fantasy, I liked Goodkinds Sword Of Truth, and Martins Song Of Ice And Fire series.

My introduction to Joss Whedons work was when I first watched Firefly about a year ago, and I was hooked. I purposely avoided the Buffy series when it first came out, partly because I identified it with the movie, and assumed the writing would have no substance.

Once I realised how good Firefly was, I started watching Buffy from the start of season five until it's completion on Space tv here in Toronto. Now, they've started the rotation from season one (five episodes per week), so I'm catching up on the first four seasons in order.

I've also been watching some of the Angel episodes too, and I could just kick myself for passing them over the first time around. Oh well, better late than never.

TheShrike:

Ahhh, a kindred soul! I'm definitely down with the "Three B's" of Hard Sci-Fi: Bear, Brin and (Gregory) Benford. Don't care much for fantasy, but to each his own. Tried BtVS and Angel, but... (see, 'fantasy', as previously noted).

I too read "Hyperion" and enjoyed it immensely, and even read the first follow-up, "The Fall of Hyperion", which I likewise enjoyed. Sadly, I haven't read his later works; but, if I survive long enough, that's on my to-do list. I am currently reading (devouring) Neil Gaiman's "American Gods". Even though I've not finished it, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say, "Read this novel!"

Please don't be a stranger. We need literate and thoughtful posters here; all of them we can get (okay, so we're greedy).

Respectfully,

zoid

Confession time. It was Fri night after a long and not so pretty week of work. I partook of a rather well deserved happy hour which resulted in a very happy Browncoat indeed. Being over served by the nice chap at the pub, I eventually found myself .....here. What resulted was a repetitive and silly post about Reavers, as I was enjoying watching Bushwhacked on its 2 yr anniversary. If memory serves me, and it likely does not, I was intruigued at how vivid and certain both Mal and Zoe were when talking about Reavers. Mal's certainty that it WAS Reavers, and Zoe's graphic portrayal of what lay in store if the Reavers ever caught them got my Bass Ale mind to think. Perhaps not my best addition to this board, but I enjoyed making it. I think.
