Kiba owes me her life.

Four AM. Can't sleep. Who'd have thought?

There's a couple of things I'd like to say. And a few things I really can't. First of all, I'm prouder of this show and the people I worked with on it than I can express in words, monkey noises, or hyroglyphics. I believe this has been some fairly great TV. And the experience of making it... I've had crew members who've been working for 20 years say they've never worked around such excitement, support and love. You walk on that set, you're transported. The cast: 9 count 'em 9 incredibly talented actors who are all decent, wonderful people. This phenomenon cannot be explained by science.

Second of all, don't think for a second that I have given up on this show. I think it has been mistreated shamefully, but the Fox network has indicated that they would not stand in the way (which they can) of my finding a new home for the show. That's no easy prospect. But I will do everything in my power, as always, to keep this bird in the air. Of course I'll post if there's any news.

But even if the show goes back up elsewhere, I'm going to lose a good portion of my crew. Production will halt, they'll need to find new jobs. You can't imagine how that feels. How much they brought to the table, how hard and well they worked. And their Christmas bonus is this. As much as the cast, the staff, and my not so secret lover Minear, I honor those guys, and hope to get them back on board.

So for now, I proudly take my place beside Profit, The Ben Stiller Show, the Tick, and Action. But I won't rest until I've found safe harbour (no, not the Gregory Harrison show) for this vessel.

I've got the time.

It ain't like I'm sleeping.

-joss.

It's nice to hear honesty, and it's also nice to hear that Joss isn't going up. Plus it's nice to hear that Fox will let him look around.

Maybe there's hope yet.

Joss: We got your back. Just tell us where we should be aiming our cannons!

I have a strong feeling Firefly will live beyond Fox. On another network? on Cable? in Syndication? Somehow this show will survive. It's a shame the production chemistry may suffer, but that's no obstacle.

Firefly's guaranteed base audience of 3.5 to 4 million is nothing to sneeze at... (most new shows have no such guarantee) and these numbers are from here in the U.S. alone. Intelligent American shows often do much better abroad than they do here at home.

I sure hope Fox doesn't interfere with the DVD possibilities. The possibility of a Firefly S.1 DVD set increases the longer the show runs elsewhere.

Be prepared to become very proactive and not just wish for things to happen.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

A response on that bbx said it quite well: FF doesn't march with the zeitgeist of the times, it's not goose-stepping.

One of the problems is that we're all depending on("to depend": to hang from) corporate TV to make non-corporate decisions. How effing likely is THAT? Aren't there non-corporate means of communication? What about subscriber downloads or something? Then FF and Farscape and some of the other great cancelled shows wouldn't have to hang from the corporate teat anymore.

National networks don't pick shows up for syndication, local affiliates do; hence the word "syndication." It is possible that a syndicated show will air on the WB in Detroit but on CBS in Dallas. The local stations also choose the time slots.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. But this bags the question are there any shows that do this as thier only outlet. I know shows like simpsons and the 70's show are syndicated but they are only old episodes. Is there any president of a show being purely sydicated with no "home" network to air new episodes?

Wasn't Star Trek: The Next Generation a syndicated-only show?

I thought TNG was a FOX show.

But I know there have been syndicated-only series. Most of those cheesy action series (e.g. Xena, Mutant X) that always come on at odd times of the weekend? Those are all syndicated.

TNG, DS9, Hercules, Xena, Beastmaster, Earth:Final Conflict, Andromeda, Mutant X, etc. are all first run syndicated shows. That market was fairly good in the late 80s and early 90s because there were a lot of independent stations, unaffiliated with a network, that needed programming and liked an alternative to reruns of network shows and old movies. Many of those stations became UPN or WB affiliates, however, so there is much less demand for good original syndicated dramatic programming.

When you see a syndicated show at, say, 7 pm or 11:30 pm on your FOX affiliate, this doesn't mean that it's a part of the FOX network programming but that it has been bought by that local station to fill in the hours when FOX doesn't provide network programming.

I hope Joss can bring FF back. My take would be first-run syndication. If he can get enough oversea financing (how is the show doing oversea and Canada?)... maybe. I noticed "Starhunter" has several countries backing that show ("Starhunter" just started here in the US, but it has been on for more than two years in other countries). A lot of shows have been cancelled due to backers dropping out (last season, "Relic Hunter" and "VIP")

There's a remote chance for FF to be picked up by Sci-Fi for new episodes. They did it with "Stargate" and "Sliders." But, of course, those shows had several seasons under the belt. It was the production companies like MGM that wanted "Stargate" to continue so they could have more episodes for syndication. This is the main reason...enough episodes, better syndication, better profit. FF has only 15 episodes, just enough for Sci-Fi to show reruns as special programming.

UPN and WB. The WB may be still hard feelings toward Joss due to the problems with "Buffy" and moving it to UPN. "Angel" is under contract with the frog network.

UPN may be interested, but Paramount's main baby is "Star Trek", aka "Enterprise." That is their franchise.

Who knows? It will be hard, but I hope Joss will find another home for FF. First-run syndication would be the perfect fit...at least he would get one full season of 22 episodes (unless show really tanks in the ratings for local stations).

My thoughts from a really sad fan

I am so hoping FF will be picked up by WB or UPN, but I would be happy if it was picked up by SCi-Fi, even though my cable company is dropping that channel next month, because this show deserves another chance somewhere.

I don't care how, where, or why new episodes of Firfly are being produced. As long as there are episodes of Firefly to watch, I'll watch em. I get basic cable and a descrambler, so I get a lot of channels. And I can always (and will certianly) buy the DVD at the end of each season. It's SUCH a good show though! I've gotten 3 friends into the show...3!! If they all got 3, and their 3 got 3, that'd be a lot. Yup. So maybe one of them would have a nielson box...maybe.

The show hasn't made it to Australia yet so there's no way to measure how well it's doing. Plus we Aussies have no money anyway.
