Proposed: Browncoat recruiters are "drummers"

In the slang of the Old West, a travelling salesman was often termed a "drummer," since his job was to "drum up" business for his parent company.

In a similar vein, I propose that Browncoats who make it their business to recruit new fans for the show be granted the distinction of being titled "drummers" for their trouble. All of us have a duty to recruit, of course, but there are some whose efforts rise well above the call: Sendmeawave (Rick) at DragonCon, for example, or more recently techiecl at Anime Weekend Atlanta. These worthies set the example for the rest of us with their energy, organization, and drive, and deserve some extra recognition.

The "drummer" label also harks back to one of the movies Joss Whedon has named as an inspiration for Firefly: Stagecoach, the Academy Award-winning classic Western. One of the passengers on the eponymous stagecoach was a Mr. Peacock, a whisky "drummer." This character is given the nod by Mr. Whedon in "Serenity," where Book's repeated refusal to be labelled "grandpa" directly parallels mousy Mr. Peacock's denial that he is a "Reverend" minister.
