I would agree that George Lucas is a good storyteller. However, you don't see our Joss having to go back and add character development scenes in order to make sense of the story arc, a la George's digital Jabba the Hut in the "new" episode IV.

Just one more reason to hail the Whedonverse.

Actually, based on my own opinion and the general hubub surrounding Lucas's revisions, I don't think he needed to go back and change anything in order for the story or characters to make sense. He chose to do so because of his own bloated ego.

Much of Lucas' influence is drawn from Greek and Norse Mythology, which for story telling you can't go wrong with. His Achilles Heel (sorry) is dialogue though.

I think his more imaginative days are long behind him. There's a kind of feeling that he's resigned himself to the average, which is fair I guess, he put in a great deal of innovation to sound back in the eighties.

However when you look back on THX 1138 you wonder if he could ever create something on that level again.

I don't think it was necessary adding pieces to the original Star Wars trilogy as it just drew too much attention to itself and felt extremely out of place. I was always under the impression that it was much cooler having Jabba mentioned in the first Star Wars and not have him make an appearance.

He was like a great threat that loomed above Han Solo, a distant and focussed nemesis that made Solo and edgey awkward character.

A modern day Damocles with that sword above him. Never allowing him to ease up.

Just my two cents worth.....

I agree. The few digital "enhancements" were distracting and unnecessary. What was really behind this?

Absolutely. I'm a fan of the first trilogy and I thought it stood very well on its own, as it was originally filmed. I really don't want anything to do with the new films and the only reason I'm not going to buy the episode iv-vi set is that he ruined it by putting in references to the new films. Hell with that. The new films suck and I don't even want to see references to them in my old favorites.

I cant say I care much for the new films but I always thought that rergardless of how bad these films were they wouldn't affect my love for the OT. I cant say thats true now though, I really have no interest in what hes doing to the OT now and its been a long while since I watched any of them, which is a shame but at least Ive found something new to care about in the sci fi world.
