KHAZARA

Phew, it's 1:45 a.m. and I just got back home to San Diego after visiting Universal Studios (Hollywood) today. I wanted to share with you, my fellow browncoats out there, my Serenity experiences! Sorry if this post is a little long, but this is first-hand information here about the filming! Spoilers in this post: not really any spoilers in this report, but I do describe another vehicle in the movie.

Okay, I went to Universal today with a friend of mine. When we took the tram tour, it starts by going down this hill that has various movie posters from years gone by. Immediately upon rounding the corner, Stage 12 is on the left, which I knew that was where Serenity has been shooting. The main door to the soundstage was open; as we drove by, I made sure to get a look insite that big door. I saw the front end of a ship -- it was Serenity! Couldn't see much, but I definitely recognized it. Wow! That was really cool.

Then, near the end of the tour, in a parking lot there was a big green screen up against the side of one of the parking garages. There was crew of people around the lot, the main focal point being what appeared to be some sort of jet fighter without wings. From its design, I thought it could be another ship or Serenity herself, but I couldn't tell from the quick glimpse I could get. But I vowed I would learn more!

The day went on with my friend and I doing the theme park thing. It was a really good day for crowds, no more than 10 minute waits on the rides. From the pics posted by the others who had been near stage 12 and got to meet some of the cast, I was able to determine what area of the park had those bushes and bars that were holding the others back. I popped out of the short line-up for Jurassic Park the Ride to head over there, leaving my friend behind. I figured if I did get a glimpse, it would be easier to get around by myself instead of as a pair. It was great that there were no crowds in line for Jurassic Park, I just strolled over past two queuing areas to the aforementioned bars and foliage. I reached the location; and the wide emergency exit doors were wide open, to the street where the tram comes down. So out I went.

I walked across the little street, purposefully like I knew what I was doing there and like I belonged. Up the driveway to Stage 12. Peered in the door; there was Serenity. Not much going on, just 3 guys or so inside. So I stepped into the soundstage. I walked up to the guys and asked if I could take a quick peek. One of them said sure, I could even go inside if I wanted, it was all okay!! So.. umm, yeah you bet I did!

From the outside looking in, I could see the mess hall area, with the ivy painted on the yellow walls. I walked in. My eyes became big and I started to tremble slightly -- I was ON Serenity!! My heart was racing, this was fantastic! It appeared that shooting had wrapped in Stage 12. The set that existed here was the cockpit, small area between the two doors behind the cockpit, a walkway that had the shafts down to the crew's quarters, the mess hall, and a hallway leading to the engine room (and the engine room itself). It was all very small! I can't even believe that the 9 castmembers would fit around a table in the mess hall. But outside the set, all the cables were wrapped up and organized, looked to be ready for packing up. No sign of any other sets at all; if the other sets (ie. cargo bay, Inara's shuttle, crew quarters, med lab) had been in the soundstage, they were not around any longer. (I hope the cast was around on Monday for the recent cake delivery!)

So I walked through the set. It had been stripped of all props and almost everything else. The cockpit had no instruments or buttons left, they had all been removed. But I did mime the flight control just like Wash did. :) I also slid the cockpit door a little, it slides very easily. :) (Hey you like details, right?)

In the hallway leading to the engine room, there were a couple decals on the bulkhead, mostly in Chinese lettering. But underneath in English was something like, "Caution, things have a habit of blowing up in space."

Sorry, no pics at all for you... (or for me either!) :(

Now, back to the big greenscreen. Now, when I say big greenscreen, I mean big! It was probably about 5 storeys high and the same wide, hanging on the outside of one of the parking garages. In the afternoon I decided to search the parking garages and find out what ship was in front of the green screen. After searching my 3rd parking garage, I found it. I looked down and got a really good look at this vehicle. It appeared to have the nose of something like an F-14, then behind the 2-seater cockpit were 4 engines, like an X-Wing fighter. But no wings. They were working on the vehicle, still adding touches to it; its structure was metal which was a bronzey colour. The 'cockpit' area was actually covered in solid metal. The vehicle was sitting on a 20-foot section of railroad track.

I spoke with a security guard and asked if he knew what movie was being filmed. He said he wasn't really sure, he couldn't remember. I'm sure he was just trying to not give me any information. So I asked him directly, "Is it Serenity?" He answered me, "Yeah, I think that's the one. You know of it?" So I proceeded to mention how it was a tv show that Fox cancelled 2 yrs ago and now they're making a movie out of it. He checked his sheets and showed me the info sheet he had, "Serenity" listed at the top of the sheet. It is indeed some ship in the movie, CONFIRMED!! It appears to likely be some two-seater ship, it had no markings on it. Probably not Alliance. I did go back later and take a picture, if it turns out I'll get it scanned and post it here.

Phew! So those are my Serenity experiences. I was so excited to get on the set, man oh man! It would've been better to see some castmembers or something like that, but since production was done in there I actually got in there. Wow. Too cool.

Hope you enjoyed my report!

Thanks for the report Khazara. It is great of you to post this for those of us not fortunate enough to go to the set.

Too bad you did not get to see any of the BDHs, but I think filming is set to wrap today or tomorrow. I do envy you your chance to walk onboard Serenity. It is a shame you did not get any pictures. It would have been shiny to see Kaylee's good girl before we see her in theatres.

The 2 seater ship you saw sounds pretty interesting. I wonder what it is for in the movie. I hope that pic of yours turns out. It will give us something to speculate on for days.

I love living vicariously through others.

I admit I feel a slight twinge of dissapointment that Universal apparently didn't carry on with Joss' notion of building Serenity in as few pieces as possible, so's the actors could really feel at home. As I recall, the TV show set was actually two big continuous pieces, so when Joss filmed them moving through the ship, they were actually moving through the ship. But I guess that's not as practical on a movie set.

Oh well. It's still gonna be great to see that old bird in the air again.

That's how it was designed originally, no? One set was the first deck (cockpit, messhall, engineroom), and the other set was the second deck (cargo bay, infirmary, passenger quarters). The only thing that sounds like it may be different is the crew quarters underneath the corridor between the cockpit and messhall, which may just have been overlooked.

Sounds to me like Universal did it the same way, judging from the description from our intrepid adventurer.

Wow, you got lucky! I'm thinking the only reason you were allowed to get so close is because shooting is wrapped and all the guys cleaning up didn't care if some strange Browncoat was wandering around the set! And what's funny is the security guard who had no idea he was standing around the set of the soon-to-be-best film of 2005, LOL!

Wait wait wait. They didn't do this? Blasphemy! How could it be a Firefly film if there aren't lots of shots moving through the ship?

I'm gonna be all grumpy for half an hour now. That was so cool, how you could go through the entire ship, and those fools at Universal breaking it up, grumble grumble.

*sigh* Okay, you have to make sacrifices I guess. And even though I think the ship should have been built as before, I guess those boys at Universal have greater concerns than a single set construction. And they're bringing back Firefly, so I guess I can't complain. Love you, Universal.

For a tv show you build a set and plan scripts around it. Joss could not know in advance what his specific shooting needs would be, so he insisted on a design to allow the types of shots he knew he would want later.

For a movie you write a script and plan your set to meet your specific shooting needs. He knew before they ever started planning the set design exactly what shots he wanted, so if there were any shots that went from one place to another continuously those sections would be built that way.

The breaking up of the sets may allow us even better angles of other sequences, so there's no reason to grumble. Nothing has been lost due to this; it's just a difference in the needs between the 2 media. One set design concept is for continuing use and the other is to meet the needs of just one script.

Oh, great picture of the ship! I'm glad it came out.

Okay, this thread has gotten me a little confused about the Serenity set. KHAZARA did mention that the set seemed to be broken up, but I think it was because they finished filming and were packing the sets away. In one of the official blogs, they mention that a fourth stage (12) was used only for the "rebuilt Firefly class cargo ship".

And in one of Jewel's blogs, she says "Our whole ship is built in there. The whole first level—cargo bay, infirmary, bunks, etc. and the second level—engine room, aft deck, dining room, foredeck, and the bridge. I can't tell you how overwhelmed I was when I first walked on to that set, all lit up. It's like no time has passed. Well, the ship's gotten a little bit of a make over, but nothing too major—just a few special details added here and there."

Those are the only references I found quickly, but I was always under the assumption that they were still filming on a continuous set. Actually, something I read made me think it was a one whole set with two levels, but I have no idea where I got that from.

I'm still sticking with my theory that they didn't change much except widen the hallways and make things a little shinier. Regardless, I have faith it'll turn out well no matter what.

Your theory is right on.

Just sayin' this to help put folks minds at ease... It's true that the movie set Serenity was built in a very similar way to the original. It was divided up into two continuous halves, just as it was for TV.

I know. I was there and saw the complete set with all props and goodies intact.

There are a few proportional changes to the design, some areas seem larger, while some areas are more "compact". A few design adjustments here and there too... enhancements that give a bit more depth and character. But overall, it is our beloved Serenity in all her well worn, industrial funkiness, beautiful glory.

So be assured everyone, the set evokes that ol' future tyme Serenity look and feeling.

Yeah, I kinda remember some of the BDE reports mentioning the ship was more or less intact, so I'm going to go with the theory that they had started to disassemble or 'fold' parts of the set to store it temporarily...until they start filming Serenity 2 and 3, of course!!!

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

The portion of the set that I saw is the "Level 2" that Jewel refers to. I believe that each "level" of the set were built on ground level, like side by side, in different parts of the soundstage. Level 1 was already gone when I was in there, and the Level 2 set was still wholly intact but they had started taking things off the set like the props, computer panels, etc.

Ahh, good point about the size. It's an awful big model, then!! I was thinking they were going to have some outdoor human-on-the-outisde-hull type of greenscreen work, hence the my assumption of the size of the ship. This sucker is something like 25 feet long in reality.

Thanks for posting the pic of the other ship. Very interesting design. Seems to be some sort of military intercept type ship. Wonder if it had or will have wings. Looks like a two seater cockpit. Maybe room for a squad of infantry in the belly.

The first thing I thought when I saw your pic was, "That's a Reaver ship!" - and I felt a twinge in the pit of my stomach. I can't locate a screen cap right now, but think about the view we get of the Reaver ship in FF. It is seen from the front since it is chasing Serenity, but I'd swear that's the same type of ship you captured in your photo. I think Joss' DVD commentary specifically pointed out that Reaver ships are asymmetrical to emphasize how far over the edge they've gone. Does this ship look asymmetrical? Yeah. It's got "spikes" (?) coming off the port side, but not off the starboard side.

Why are you still arguing what's been decided?

Looking at the pic above, and having seen the gag reel from the movie that Adam Baldwin showed at Dragon Con where this ship was shown rolling down a California road, I don't think it is a Reaver ship. It is too small for Reavers, and appears to be in too good a state of repair. The cockpit area does not appear to be much larger than that of an Apache helicopter, so it appears it would only seat two people. There may be a small interior compartment for people, but I think it unlikely.

I think it might very well be the Operative's ship. It appears to be built for speed to pursue quarry or make a fast get away.

I know which clip you're talking about. Everyone seemed to laugh at the shot of that ship rolling down the road. Wasn't it chasing them while they were on the new mule? Anyway, I never quite got what was so funny about that scene. Maybe it just went by too quickly for me. But I guess we'll just have to see the movie to figure out what this ship is. Think we should do that? I don't know. I'm not sure I'm interested. ;-P

The scene from the gag reel was funny because the ship was wobbling pretty badly as it rolled down the road. It looked as if the ship was about to come apart or lose a wheel or two. That and it was moving about as fast a slow walk.

I am soooo envious Khazara! Props for the pic. Can some one give a link for the vid clip you are all talking about? I am new here. I managed to catch just 2 eps of FireFly on fox before it was discontinued. It was enough. The day I saw the DVD, I nearly fell down. Anyway, I have seen them all now. (in fact, I didn't watch the last 2 unaired episodes for months because I didn't want to "run out" of fresh episodes!) Then I found this site. Just waiting for the movie now!

I was lucky. The first I ever saw of FireFly was Kaylee getting passengers onboard firefly before they leave Persephone. Turns out that was supposed to be the first one. Seeing the Train Job first would have been weird.

One more thing. Is this Joss's first feature film? I ask because there was Buffy movie before the series.
