Angel's not coming back until January 22nd? grrr.... arrrgh....

How can they give you the big cliff hanger, then not show another episode for almost 2 months?

Vindict on your own time. I'm kinda on the clock here.

Seriously, I don't know why they didn't show another episode or two before the break, but the reason why it won't return till Jan. 22 is because "Birds of Prey" has to finish, first. BoP has a new ep on Jan. 8, and its 2-hour season finale on Jan. 15. I would expect "Angel" to be heavily promoted during the BoP finale, though.

I guess I've just never paid that much attention to specific TV shows before. Last year following Buffy and this year following all three Whedon shows is the most I've ever paid attention to anything other than just watching the show if I happen to catch it. Is every season like this? with the big gaps and so much political BS about when things get shown and when they get advertised?

The gaps are not usually this big, so when "Angel" returns we can expect a whole lot of new episodes in a row. If I were a WB executive I would forget about "Dawson's Creek" and would suggest airing two eps of "Angel" on the 22nd to break in the new night.

Most TV shows roughly follow the pattern of 10 new episodes, 6 reruns, 6 new, 6 reruns, 6 new, 10+ reruns; but with a lot of random specials, other (national) pre-emptions, and additional reruns thrown in.

I learn something new everyday. Never realized that there's a pattern to it. Cool.

Actually that is more of a syndication pattern. It varies with network shows. syndication shows liek Andromeda are nine new then reruns then 7 more new followed by reruns finished by the last 6 new of the season. Most network shows show 9to 10 to start out with and then 1-2 new ones in December mixed in with repeats followed by at least a couple of new eps in jan and all new eps in Feb, and so on.

Here's the one word to remember concerning the scheduleing of first run episodes on the networks:

Sweeps.

Sweeps are designated months during the year when advertisers do extensive, ramped up, ratings surveys which set advertising rates for the coming year.

Any series fortunate enough not to be pulled or pre-empted during those months will be running all new eps that month, and almost always reruns in the month directly after.

Those months are November, February, and May.

So if a program premiers in, say mid-September, it will run about 10 new eps to get through the end of November. Then will run about 6 re-runs, then start the new ones again a week or two early to bring their audience back to full strength for the run through February...so again, you get about 6 new eps. Re-runs again in March and early April and the cycle repeats.

So that it works out, in practice, to a 10-6-6-6-6-10 pattern...depending, of course, on the premiere date.

I forgot to list the BtVS reruns:

12/24/02 (Christmas Eve!) - "Normal Again" at 8 + "Villians"at 9

12/31/02 (New Year's Eve!) - "Two to Go" at 8 + "Grave" at 9

I am assuming UPN is showing these ep because they got better ratings than the eps this season. I haven't checked, though, so I don't know for sure.

As virtually no one is going to watch Buffy reruns on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, I'd guess they are just burning those off.

I believe that UPN has already shown those episodes in Reruns. I'm pretty sure that Seeing Red, Villans, Two To Go, and Grave were run before the beginning of this season.

So they're not necessarily burning off reruns, these are 3rd showings.

And I might be watching.

Something to do whilst I wrap prezzies.

Actually, according to the Futon Critic, Angel will switch to Wednesdays on Jan. 15.

Here's the full text:
"Angel" will make its transition from Sundays to Wednesdays on January 15, but it may not be a permanent one according to the WB's latest moves. The fourth-year drama will air Wednesdays at 9:00/8:00c for at least 6-7 weeks (i.e. through February sweeps) after which the Frog network will make the call as to whether the show will stay in the slot or shift back to Sunday nights. Midseason action drama "The Black Sash" will then take either the Wednesday or Sunday, 9:00/8:00c slot depending where "Angel" lands.
