No surprises there: 1) Joss made it pretty clear back at LA Comic Con that he's no fan of the current administration, although he was tasteful about it; 2) "Firefly" at least is about the dangers of centralized, authoritarian governments that don't care about individual rights--and that is what some of us see happening with the Patriot Act, among other things. Add that Joss is smart, well-educated, and has spent enough time oversees to see the world from an international perspective, and you have all the makings of a Kerry supporter.

To those of you who are Republican browncoats: there is no shame in rejecting a public figure who deviates from the true values of your party. "Firefly"'s browncoats are true republicans--they believe in small, decentralized government that interferes minimally in the lives of private citizens. The GOP used to be all about that, not about huge deficits, legislation against private moral choices, deal-making behind closed doors, and letting big business run amok over individual needs and environmental protection. If I were able to host a Firefly/Kerry party, I'd welcome with open arms any GOP supporters who want to take their party back from the right-wing evangelicals who have hijacked it!

Wouldn't that be more of a Libertarian Browncoat ?

Please, don't tie Firefly in w/ the politics. It only ruins it for me. And I'll NEVER attend anything remotely connected w/ Kerry. Firefly or not.

Perhaps this should be redirected to the real world discussions section, and forgotten.

You know, most good science fiction--hell, most good fiction of any kind--is about the real world, in metaphorical form. Joss clearly means that to be the case, not just in FF but in Buffy and Angel as well. Of course, you are welcome not to post in or read discussions that don't interest you; but I hardly think that "general discussion" threads have to exclude references to the relationship between FF as a story (about browncoat resistance to overcentralized authority), and the real world, which inevitably includes politics.

As for the Libertarian/Republican distinction, Libertarians are much more extreme in their anti-government sentiments. The traditional GOP position (prior to the takeover by right-wing evangelicals) reflected a Jeffersonian view--small government (not non-existent, as the Libertarians would have it), minimally involved in people's lives, with governance focused at the local level rather than in a unified federal system. If Firefly had had time to mature, I wonder if we wouldn't have seen some interesting stories about successful forms of local government. Well, maybe we already did: "Heart of Gold" is a good story about two kinds of rule, one of which is patriarchal, cruel and authoritarian, the other of which is matriarchal, kind and inclusive. We know which side that episode came down on. . . .

Are you sure about Republicans? The behind closed doors hand wringing is Cheney and gang. They've been doing that, I'd imagine, for the last 40 years or more. I'm a Republican. I like Bush. I despise his adminstration. I'm not entirely sure what I think about Bush's presidency. Right now, though, the only thing going on that I don't like on the domestic front is stuff I got myself into, and the price of gas. I don't trust the Kerry/Edawrds ticket. Especially Edwards, and he's even from North Carolina, where I live. Edwards is getting to far ahead, too fast. He's had one term in DC. One. And that was his first foray into politics. I just don't trust it.

And I'm not surprised Joss doesn't like Bush or the Government. Most everyone in the entertainment industry feels the same way. But I watch movies and TV shows because they're good, not because of the political views of the people behind them.

It is a misrepresentation to say that the Libertarians are 'extreme' in their views. They don't have 'anti gov't' views, just want to see the Federal Gov't act more in accordance to the way the Founders had intended. I find nothing extreme in that, what so ever. Many try to equate Libertarians to anarchist, which they are clearly not. Granted, each party attracts folks w/ in a spectrum, some more radical than others, but any such talk about Libertarians, as a whole as being 'extreme', is lost on me.

There is a section for 'real world' discusssion on this board and it's put there for a reason. Just my 2 cents.
