I ran across this through another Firefly website and I thought this was a really cool story. It goes to show just how cool Browncoats really are. The website has the pics, http://www.jparks.net/blog/?p=15.

Here's a copy of the blog...
“That hat makes you look like an idiot”

Jeff and I just got back from a prescreening of Serenity in Austin and guess what we bartered for? Well if you are not a die hard Fire Fly fan and guessed it from the title, Jayne Hats.

We had two extra tickets because Aim got sick and Justin couldn’t make it. Jeff was just going to see if we could just trade them in but when we got there this woman had a sign on the back of her truck “WILL TRADE JAYNE HATS FOR TICKETS”. I point this out to Jeff and we went over to see what the sign was all about. We told her that we had two extra tickets and she jumped out of her seat asking how much we wanted for them. To her astonishment we said that we would take the hats. We thought it a bit strange that someone would trade hand made hats, she was actually making them in the parking lot, for a pair of tickets. After putting on our new hats we went inside and this guy tells us that it was awesome that we traded the tickets for the hats because he had to pay a scalper $75US to get his ticket! After getting some drinks we went and stood in line and the woman that we traded the tickets to was so happy that she came up and gave Jeff and I a hug and thanked us trading the tickets to her.

I never felt so much like a geek than standing in line to see a movie and wearing a costume from the movie. It was like going to see Star Wars dressed as a storm trooper. I felt even more like a geek when we got into the theater and everyone started cheering because we were wearing Jayne Hats.

Before the movie started we had a surprise appearance by Nathan Fillion and Ron Glass. They stayed and watched the movie and had a Q&A and autograph session after the screening of the film, which involved a dramatic scene where Nathan spat water on my shoe.

thank you for the great story,
I love that you traded the tickets for the hats...
and that is cool that Nathan got (spat?) water on you! LOL

I would love to hear other funny stories from the BDM and to see photos
I have to confess that I had a hat, but didn't put it on...because it seemed like too much...

That is a great story, and one more illustration of why Austin's unofficial motto is "Keep Austin Weird."

I find that a Blue Sun tee-shirt makes a subtler statement. Last time I was at the Alamo Drafthouse Theater in Austin, someone stopped me to ask where I got it.

Man, Fillion and Glass in my hometown, and me way too late to get tix . . . Go-se!

Actually, I've got one of the T-shirts that has that motto on the back from Chuy's up in Round Rock.

I think I'll plan on wearing a Jayne hat with the Jayne "Fighting Elves 28" shirt when I go see the movie on Sept. 30th. I think I'll even put in a few strands of straw in the hat for authenticity. That and I'll have to avoid shaving for a few days for the full effect.

Espradley, I could hug you, I checked eBay and saw pairs of tickets going for over $150! You are shiny and wonderful and restore my faith in humanity. Thank-you

I'm starting to feel bad about this, but it wasn't me. I was surfing firefly links when I ran into that story. I mearly posted it here so many others would get a chance to see it. Sorry about the confusion.

The praise you give, and well deserved praise it is, goes to the gentlemen who posted the blog on the above mentioned website. :)

When we pulled up to the theater, they were sitting in the back of their truck with a big sign. I am glad they got in. I was afraid someone would show up and try to take advantage of folks who did not get tickets (I bought mine from ebay for $130 :/) It was a nice gesture on their part but at 10:01, those tickets weren't going to be worth too much.

I got the ladies email and sent her some money and she is making me a hat now. She was working on another one in line.

Hi all!

I'm the nutsoid Austin lady with the Jayne hats and the truck with the sign.

I'm so glad I got to trade hats for tickets and I'm afraid I've made the same deal for the next showing. . .

I have knitted six Jane hats in the last week and have ordered enough yarn to knit about twenty more. . .

So yes, I am now selling them.
