QUICKSAND

... and as such, I'm SURE someone has written on this before, but if not, then I certainly do rule.

"The Train Job." Not my favorite episode, it never would have even been written if the people who run Fox weren't such morons. But there it is. Like a scratch on the roof of your mouth that would heal if only you could stop tonguing it.

Anyway... two lines from the episode I had to run onto the 'net and post:

Inara: (about the captain) I've been on this ship for eight months, and I don't think I'll EVER know him.

....... and then, in the show's final act...

Sherrif: (regarding Mal and Zoe's supposed contact on the planet) Trouble is, Joey Bloggs ate his gun about eight months back. Times are hard....

I think I'm paraphrasing, but if eight years with Joss have taught me anything, it's that THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES. Especially not in eps that Joss wrote/cowrote himself.

That's all.

America loves a winner!

Well, in this case, there might be just that....a coincidence.

Didn't Joey Bloggs suffer from Bodens Malady? Or is that just implied ? And if " times are hard" , how could he have even afforded.....

Why would Inara frequent a mininig colony...? ok, so maybe she didn't exactly have to frequent there. In fact, it's unlikely she HAD been there, as commented by the sherrif that it's not often that folk see an actual Companion out there. Had Inara been there, they'd have definatly remembered her.

There are plenty of blanks left to be filled in here, but I think it's safe to say that a few of them have been taken care of. And 1 more thing..Inara had no hint of hesitation in waltzing into a sherrif's office to rescue Mal. What ever connection she may have had w/ Joey Bloggs, she must not have had dealings w/ him there.

But I do commend you on picking up on that. Curious indeed.

Quicksand:

TTJ as the Marla Singer of Firefly episodes. Things that make you go 'Hmmm'...

Jeez, I sure hope Inara isn't responsible for every dirt poor laborer's death, eight months back. I myself once surmised that Inara's Companion training might have included assasination (while the victims are in the throes of passion, they'd be pretty defenseless). She does seem fairly proficient with swords (Shindig), concealed knives (HoG) and a wicked-looking blaster that we only ever see the one time (Trash). And if I recall correctly, the 'courtesan' traditions from both East and West include such 'assasins in the bed'.

However, I fail to see a possible motive for such a high-priced hooker-assasin to act on a lowly worksite supervisor. Even if he'd 'dated' the King of Londium's daughter, leaving her with a bun in the oven, Early (or someone of his ilk) could've handled him with ease. It's not like a coal miner would be surrounded by security.

Naw, I'm guessing that if Inara whacks a guy (or girl), they're pretty well insulated against regular assasins, and that all the parties and organizations that would be affected by the 'transaction' are aware of Inara's employer's intention, if not the specific methodology. A sophisticated assasin (as I assume Inara would be) would not be easy to pin blame on. Something like: Client has clandestine session with Inara because he's married; subsequent autopsy finds he died of massive heart attack in his bed with no evidence of another person having been in the room at the time of occurence; finding: death by natural causes. (NB: I can't imagine a better way to go than 'death by Inara in a bedroom'. Heart attack, you betcha.)

Joey Bloggs -- indigent laborer on a hellhole moon -- simply ate his own gun, regardless the timing that may have been implied by rushed scriptwriting.

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
I know Inara's not technically a 'hooker', but allow me a pretty turn of phrase, m'kay?

I'm not saying she was an assassin, or even that this Joey Bloggs fellow was some high-up anything.

All I'm saying is, some guy died around the same time Inara felt the need to take residence on Serenity. Could mean anything.

Or nothing at all.
