In this month's issue on my online magazine, I wrote an essay on Firefly and sci-fi in general. It's aimed toward people who have limited or no experience with the show, but I think y'all will like it. You can read it at:

http://www.primum-mobile.net

The article in question should be obvious to anyone 'round here, but if all else fails, just look for the one by me.

Let me know what you think!

-Paul Lytle

P.S. Before I start getting all of the "What about Simon and River?" questions, I left them out of the article simply because I was trying to speak more of the mood of the show than the characters, and every time I wrote a draft with them included, I ended up writing paragraphs of plot summary that was dragging the whole essay down. So I decided to leave those two characters to be a surprise for newcomers.

UPDATE:

when I first posted this, the article in question was in the current issue of the magazine. It has snice been moved to "Back Issues," but the following link will still get you there:

http://www.primum-mobile.net/010/lit1.html

Thanks!

Not to pick any nits...well, I guess I am. In the article, ya got the words wrong, in one line, to the Ballad of Serenity.

Line 4 should reads as, - I don't care

Least, that's how it reads per what is listed here - http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=10229

Affirmative on that whole approval thing though.

Well, that's what I get from trying to do it from memory . . .

Ah, well. The great thing about going an e-zine rather than a print one it that I can fix my stupid mistakes before anyone sees them.

Er. Well, anyone but those who have already seem them.

Thanks!

Very well done. Have you seen the movie yet? I am interested in reading your review of it eventually.

I don't say that because I am hinting that your opinion will somehow change or anything. I just mean that your are obviously thoughtful and articulate and I would enjoy reading a review of the movie written by you.

Wow, this intense spoiler-phobia around here is really rubbing off...

Excellent!

I like your writing style and I like your reasonings. I remain unconvinced by your idea that Mal is searching for God but I understand it. It is a moving article

I looked around the site and will keep an eye on the zine in future - the Philophia are excellent and I agree with most of them.

Also, your 'ex libris' section - fantastic! I totally agree, even with Dickens. A Tale of Two Cities was always my favourite. BTW A Feast for Crows is finished and rumours are it will be published on July 26th 2005!

*Yeah, but is being naked really adding to anything to the review?

Very nice! It made me get a little teary-eyed. I hope it makes everyone who reads it and hasn't heard of Firefly to run out and buy it!!

Hmm... does it have anything to do with the other thread that mentions that Amazon's sales of the Firefly DVD are up? (or it could be the trailer..whatever.)

But seriously, wonderfully written.

Haven't seen it yet. I don't know if I'll put a review of it in the e-zine, since this is not normally the stuff we write about, but I'll try to fit it in somehow. Our audience is made up mostly of professors, political junkies, and preachers (I'm not sure how these categories overlap either, but that's the way it is), so this sort of thing is going to be different for them. I'm hoping it's interesting enough to spark some interest.

ABOUT TIME!

Emma, thanks for taking a look at the rest of the 'zine. I think you'll continue to enjoty it in the future.

Er, I think it was the trailer, but thanks for the vote of confidence! So far, y'all make up the vast majority of the people who have read the article. I think we do a great mag, but we do not have a huge audience (yet!).

Thanks for coming by, everyone! See ya at the threatre!
