A lot of people talk about the darker Mal from Serenity (the episode) but I never got the feeling the character was any different.

In Serenity they were almost out of gas, the last few jobs they had were worthless, they were down on money, they were down on prospects, and the alliance was close to them.

By the train job they were more prosperous. I didn’t feel like the character was any different, just the situation. I mean if Kaylee had been shot in the train job or any other episode and now that person who did that had a gun to the head of the innocent do you think Mal would hesitate to shoot the guy?

I don’t.

Am I alone in this thinking or do others think that the character of Mal was unchanged, but instead the situation was changed to make the episodes lighter, as was requested?

I agree, mostly! The one aspect of Mal's character that did seem to change between Serenity and The Train Job was his attitude to Inara. I guess it could be put down to him not being so stressed, but he was very insulting to her in Serenity, whereas in The Train Job and the rest of the series it was more humourous and it was clearer that he did like her as a person even if they never could get from one end of a conversation to the other without one of them saying something that upset the other.

I was very pleased to see this change, because it's the one thing I don't like about Serenity (which is one of my favourite episodes), and I don't think it fits with Mal's character - he's way too stubborn to have someone on his ship that he really cannot abide simply for the money.

I'm glad you brought this up.I didn't want to start on this due to spoiler issues, but I didn't see any 'darker' Mal in the least. I would have been ok w/ it, as we've seen him in some pretty dark spots before. ( Pilot episode where he's posing that Simon be tossed out the air lock if Kaylee doens't recover from her gunshot wound. )

Speaking of differences in characters, mild spoiler -

I thought it was Simon who really had grown up or possibly gotten darker in the BDM. FF Simon would have never have thought of throwing a punch at Mal.

The only change I noticed in Mal's character was that he was not as funny in Serenity, his joking was more on a bitter level, whereas in Train Job and thereafter he actually made me smile with his humour. I chalked it up to Mal easin' up a bit once his crew was solidified, more than anything else.
But he was just a bit less fun to be around in the pilot.

Minor stuff Chrisisall
