So I got real excited when I heard a little while ago that Firefly reruns were going to start showing on Fridays on SCIFI before Stargate and such in July. Yay! But of course, in my world, nothing can be perfect...

I was watching the TV Guide Channel yesterday and right before SCIFI channel scrolled up the screen, a little notice on the scroll informed me that SCIFI was moving to Comcast DIGITAL CABLE on August 9. WTF?!?!?! So I can enjoy Firefly/Stargate/Atlantis/Battlestar for, like, a month, and then I'm screwed?! AAHHH! My dad watches Stargate, too, so I'm hoping I can convince him to get Digital Cable... but how UNFAIR and STUPID is that?! Is this happening to anyone else? Am I to wallow in my frustration and despair all alone?

I know SCIFI is great because it's showing Firefly reruns and all, but still, at this point... I HATE SCIFI CHANNEL!!!!

'Kay, I'm done ranting now.

Don't blame SCIFI, the corporate decision comes from higher than that.
Yes. It's a conspiracy. That's right. That's what I said.

Does this mean anyone with regular-old Comcast cable won't have the sci-fi channel anymore? I can't believe they'd just take away an entire network.

If they can get you to pay for an upgrade... You bet they would.

Working tech support for Comcast as I do, I am privy to a bit of info, so here it goes:

Company Line:

"We are currently putting into effect a Digital Migration so as to provide our customers with the best level of service that we can provide. The channels moved to our digital lineup will enjoy greater video and sound quality that the previous analog channels."

My Interpretation:

"We are currently putting into effect a Digital Migration so we can receive more money from our consumer base since Multi-Billion dollars just aren't enough for our Corporate Execs."

Just a humble tech's opinion......

Exactly. Even more succinctly, they're going to give you the same channels you're getting now, but for a higher price.

From the company's standpoint, they spent mega-millions putting in a new fiber-optic network a few years ago (hence, the DIGITAL in Comcast-digital). Now they're going to force you to use that system (and pay more for it, of course) to justify the investment they made. The alternative is for you to stay on your current system, pay the same fee you are now, but get less service as they take channels away from you.

There is another alternative. Personally, I had my cable turned completely off over a year ago (the day after "Angel" ended) just due to the lack of decent programming. The monthly fee kept going up while, at the same time, there was less and less on tv worth watching. Now I mostly just buy dvds and use my tv for dvd playback. No monthly fees, no commercials - you can watch whatever show you want whenever you want. Not a bad way to go.

Um if at all possible i highly recomend Direct tv sattalite service. My friend has it and my prievious landlord had it. Better service less cost. Only one slight increase in pay when they picked up local channels. The big proble I have is trees in my neighborhood. I have to get a pole stuck out in the back yard and then hope when the tech comes back out that the signal gets between the trees.

Not that I would ever advocate killing trees, even pine trees which are the tree equivalent of rats, pigeons or seagulls, but a copper spike will kill a tree deader than a doornail.

The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs.

dude, Don't blame scifi, they aren't the problem, it's your cable company that is screwing you. I understand the anger, but just try and focus it at the proper folks....

The above post is true. I would imagine that the Sci-fi channel doesn't want this any more than you do. After all, it means less viewers for their programs. No tv channel wants that.

You hit the nail right on the head.

Comcast is nothing but a money grubbing group of thieves. There are doing this "digital migration" thing so they can hit us up for even more money every month. Guess their execs need fancier cars or their trophy wives need more jewelry.

I got digital cable w/ Comcast about 6 months ago because I saw the writing on the wall. I can tell you there is nearly no difference at all in picture quality or sound.
