Fox is maintaining that Firefly is still officially on hiatus. But both Joss and Tim have officially commented online that Fox has made it clear the network will be buying no more episodes. Is it possible that the new focus on petitioning UPN is based solely on Joss and crew having finished up all 15 ordered episodes and not wanting to halt production even temporarily? (he does touch on the crew concerns in his official comments.)

Obviously it's the best thing for the show to keep this magical production crew together, but is all this fuss mostly designed to compel Fox to make a commitment to more episodes now instead of after the show's hiatus?

Since Fox apparently hasn't made an official announcement outside the company re: Firefly, they give themselves the appearance of still having a door open for the show should the ratings improve in December... which according to a recent post here at fireflyfans.net, IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING!! Apparently the numbers have been improving week-to-week since "Ariel" an episode which, mind you, had a two week break after it aired.

What happens next week when "Serenity" -- the freakin' official premiere of Firefly gets higher numbers still? What if "Serenity" gets the highest number of viewers YET for Firefly? Will Fox change its mind privately, order the rest of Firefly's remaining season and simply deny (plausibly) ever having cancelled the show in the first place?

Only one way to find out!

Everybody needs to make a whole bunch of noise about Firefly over the next week.

I. Write postcards to UPN but also WRITE POSTCARDS TO FOX!!

II. Get as many of your friends, relatives, co-workers and spiritual brethren (and sistren) to watch Firefly as you possibly can!!

III. Print up and pass these very fine and very recent Firefly media articles around:

Firefly vs. the Firing Squad
http://www.teevee.org/archive/2002/12/13/index.html

Euology for Firefly
http://whedonesque.com/

Space Cowboy
http://www.journalnow.com/wsj/MGBN3H6SO9D.html

IV. Call into radio talk shows/contests. Give the call screener the impression you are going to stay on topic but once you are live on the airwaves in your city, turn that time into a plug for Firefly!! (a friend of mine actually did this here in Seattle several weeks ago when she won a pack of CDs from a station called "The Mountain"!! The DJs even asked her questions about the show on air and let her describe the premise!)

It's time to BUZZ, BUZZ, BUZZ about the best show on TV!!

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Oh, it's possible. But as you said- it doesn't change our course of action- postcards, postcards, postcards and buzz, buzz, buzz!

Keeping my fingers crossed for a HAPPY NEW YEAR for us all- of course, I'm uncrossing them to write those POSTCARDS!

I'm wondering how much money it takes to put out a year of episodes. Has any production company considered selling stock in a specific show in order to get the funding to make it? Stock could be bought by fans, investment corporations, advertisers, etc. The contracts for the actors and production personnel could include stock options. Another source of revenue would be merchandising licenses. Once one starts thinking outside the box, the sky is the limit on alternative funding options.

"Firefly" has enormous potential, and could possibly be carried along by non-traditional means until it gels. No network wants to show it?--use webcasts. Once a substantial body of high-quality work is put together, a show like this would have a great deal of future value.

I think that number counts the pilot as 2 episodes since it's two hours long, right?

So, the 11 episodes that have been shown, 2 for the pilot, and the 2 other episodes that they ordered but haven't shown...

Speaking of... is Fox going to show those or what?

They say that they will but the time is not known yet...They've apparently done that before - left unviewed eps of cancelled series and promised to show but left them in the vaults.
I wonder as well why FOX has said nothing (also citing that no official ME/cast has said anything about the 'c' word at the FOX site so there may be a small gag order until FOX does announce) but when I mentioned that elsewhere got told that higher ups post when and where they want to. Kind of sucks to be me I guess.

Likes to mess with stuffs.

A network exec is a lot like a politician--doublespeak reign supreme, so technically, Firefly is on hiatus until FOX officially announces its cancellation, which they will probably do if and when they air the final three episodes of Firefly.

Don't you just love it? Technically, Firefly could be on indefinate hiatus if FOX never makes the official announcement. Who knows, they could even pull a Galactica one day.

Okay, so now I'm really confused. Has Firefly been cancelled or is it on hiatus.

Actually, only ten episodes have aired. The remaining are: "Serenity, Part 1," "Serenity, Part 2," "Heart of Gold," "Trash," and "The Message."

Screw the letter writing and e-mailing. If you know someone who is a Nielsen member tell them to watch the show...or turn on the damn TV and turn it to Fox during that time if they aren't going to be watching TV. Ratings...

Officially, Fox has announced that the show is on Hiatus. Production is stopped, but not *officially* cancelled. They have stated that they will not be ordering any additional episodes above and beyond those already ordered.

Fox has also stated that, once "Serenity, Parts 1 & 2" airs next week, that the remaining 3 ordered-but-unaired episodes will be shown, but they have not yet committed to any specific times/dates or even a time-frame.

Another new Fox piece-of-crap has already been rescheduled to move into Firefly's timeslot on Friday nights after "Serenity" airs.

I hope that clears up the mess, and gets you all caught up to the current level of confusion.
