Of course, we wouldn’t love it so much were this the case, but I was just wondering whether anyone has thoughts on tweaks to Firefly which might have saved the series?

(And of course I don’t mean drastic changes, e.g. changing it to a reality TV programme set in the here and now about 9 people shut in a metal container, voting each other out each week)

The fact is the Fox Network didn't want the show. Nothing even vaguely close to Joss's idea. It was a very expensive show and unless it hit Lost style ratings immediately then it was due for the chop.

I think basically they thought "Hey, this guy has come up with two successful shows which we're selling to other networks. Let's have him do one for us", nodded through his pitch without really paying attention, stared aghast at the pilot with 9 stars and no cliches, demanded a complete rewrite while planning to bury it on a Friday night.

It really didn't stand a chance.

No, I get that, but was wondering whether there was anything, short of Charlie Sheen as Capt. Mal Reynolds (play-boy of the Rim), which could have enticed the number of viewers Fox was looking for ...

Charlie Sheen probably still wouldn't have been enough. Tom Cruise? Now you're talking.

Of course, I wouldn't be on this site if that were the case...

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

The only realistic way to have kept the show on the air was for Fox to have committed themselves to making the show a success rather than doing all they could to insure it failed. Had the fools at Fox worked at all to insure the success of the show, it would still be on today.

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Who is this "they"?

Joss Whedon created three TV series and sold them to three different networks.

Mutant Enemy, Joss's company, produced all three series @20th Century Fox, with whom they had a development contract.

FOX Broadcasting Company (FOX network) never sold any of Joss's series, and couldn't, because they never owned any of them. Now if you leave out the "which we're selling to other networks", I'm sure that's exactly what FOX thought.

Keep the Shiny Side Up . . .

There are some decisions for which Fox is one big company, News Corp, this may well have been one of them.

On the other hand, Fox News once threatened to sue The Simpsons over a parody which only got resolved when they worked out they'd be suing their own company (the conflict of interest issues alone would be fantastic fun for the lawyers).
