So I've got a plan on how to get a 150,000 extra Browncoats.

So I spend all day long on the internet. I figure I might as well put that time to good use and get a few more Browncoats out there.

So here's my plan: I'm gonna spam 5 forums a day with a topic about Serenity for the next 40 days. That's like 5x40 = 200 forums. If 50 people see each topic, 20 of them will probably end up wanting to watch it. So thats 20 people x200 forums = 4000 new people.

If those 4000 new audience members take a friend with them, that'll be like 8000 extra people.

And if 20 or so Browncoats do the same as I'm doing, that'll be like 8000x20=160,000 people.

Realistically it'll probably be closer to 100,000 extra people. And then all those 100,000 people will tell all their friends about it and another 50,000 people will go see it.

150,000 people spending 7 dollars each makes over a million bucks to add to the opening weekend.

Anyone wanna join my (as of yet) one-man-campaign?

I've been using Firefly avatars and links to FFF & the trailer in my sig for a while, now, on all the other forums I visit. I've also started threads asking people what they think of the movie.

It's getting attention...

Thanks for your enthusiasm. I'm just trying to do whatever I can to get the Serenity sequels made and let as many people as possible see Serenity and Firefly. If you don't want to help there's no need for cynical comments, just don't reply. And you call yourself a Browncoat? Jesus.

Hey, pal - "I'm smelling a lotta if coming off this plan" - that was a quote from the show. The pilot, if I remember correctly. There ain't no reason to get all pissed. Thin skin doesn't become us Browncoats.

Yeah, but you need to visit OTHER forums too. Just posting on your few forums again and again won't convince any new people to watch it.

It really wasn't. I read it as it was likely meant, a joke. You conveniently missed the "but alas I like it" comment that followed, indicating that the previous comment was a joke.

More over your responce makes me very worried about the possible success of your plan. How are you going to respond if someone replies to one of your posts saying:
"I don't like sci-fi" or "I saw FireFly and thought it was crap.".
Both valid things to say, people are entitled to their opinion. Judging by your previous responce to PR not to well would be my guess.

Its not necessarily rude to post something negative about your plan.

Starting a Serenity thread at a forum isn't 'spamming'. I just put it that way so you'd know what I was talking about doing.

I'd probably be posting up the same topic over and over. Maybe get a botto do it for me.

I'm with Blinker on this. If some random outsider posted here promoting something completely off-topic then we'd either a) flame them b) ignore it. It's fine trying to get people interested in it - just keep it to relevant film/TV forums or those that you post on regularly anyway. Don't spam random strangers - you'll just annoy them and probably make them hostile towards the very thing you're trying to promote.

The reason people are expressing concern is because lately Browncoats are beginning to get a very bad rep in the 'verse (as you can see by this topic in another thread). We have to be very careful what we do from here on out to avoid being lumped as 'fanboys/girls with mental problems,' because that turns people away from seeing the movie. If people voice a concern (and PRiver's a good egg), they are just trying to help, not tear you down. Browncoats don't tear others down (unless we plan on building them back better ). And because of how rapidly you were put on the defensive here in friendly territory, I too would voice a concern over how well you will respond in the nasty world of the internet. I certainly don't want you or anyone else turning fans off, because I really want a sequel or six. So be careful what you do, and remember how it affects others.

On an unrelated sidenote, I think this is the first time I've poked my head out of RWED for quite some time. I don't want to make it a habit; I'm not sure how Hero and Chrisisall will get along without me .

When someone pulls a stunt like this at any forum worth its salt, the first thing that happens is their account gets banned, or at least restricted. Obviously this won't really matter to you, but it will effectively mean that your stunt accomplished none of the desired results, and many undesired ones. People, if they discuss anything in those threads, are unlikely to talk about anything actually related to the subject of the spam, instead discussing "that idiot spammer who got hisself banned". If Serenity ever DOES come up, it will almost automatically be negatively associated for any person who didn't already know about it.
Now, you may get lucky and have some browncoat apologist there who will cover for your mistake and implore people not to judge the entire fanbase or worse, the movie, by the poor behavior of one fan. He may even be able to get people at his forum on board with the movie himself. (And if that's the case, wouldn't you do better to leave spreading the good word to people with credentials in their traveled circles?) But more likely than not, something like this is bound to become just one more black mark in the ever growing annals of "Browncoats Behaving Badly".

"Enlarge your Serenity NOW $55.95!!!"

First, I was posting that to show that it can work, i.e., supporting your proposition. And yes, it has convinced new people to watch it.

Second, I don't post on forums that I'm not actually interested in with things like this because, as others have already said, it is considered spam. Creating an account to post something will result in that account being banned (as has already been posted).

I highly recommend people posting on all the forums they are members of, but posting on random forums just to get the information out there would be bad, in my opinion. Seriously, if someone did what you are saying on the forums that I've already hit as an established and trusted member would kill the interest I've worked so hard to develop! Please don't do that!

It really isn't that we're negative about what you're suggesting - it's that we're concerned that there are specific reasons that it shouldn't be done. I'm sorry that you aren't interested in seeing this, but please - I'm begging you - don't do this. Post on forums you are an established member; that's a great idea! In fact, amongst all of us just at this site we probably cover an extremely broad spectrum of sites.

But don't spam up a bunch of forums...

The food is SPiced hAM.

In regards to mass unsolicited e-mails, spam doesn't really stand for anything (some think it's derived from the Monty Python skit), although there is a SPAM act signed by the US congress that is an acronym for something, I can't remember exactly what. However, I remember seeing on a forum somewhere someone said SPAM could stand for Spewing a Plethora of Asinine Messages.

FOR GODS SAKE, USE YOUR HEADS PEOPLE.

When I said 'Post the same topic over and over', it's clear that what I mean is to post the same topic, on many different forums. As in writing one topic explaining Serenity and why we're desperate for it to succeed, and that posting that topic on as many forums as possible.

Also - who said anything about not posting it on the tv/movies forum? OF COURSE you'd post it on there, if you posted it anywhere else it would just get moved there anyway.

I think all you people can't get over the fact that I jokingly said the word 'spam' in my post. JESUS CHRIST.

Well, if you're as charming on the other forums as you are here, I don't see how your plan can fail.

There are places where talking about the movie will succeed (other sci-fi or media forums for example) and places where it won't (say, forums about breast cancer or Care Bears). If you're posting an absolutely irrelevant topic to a forum for the purposes of promotion, that is spam, even if you're not directly profiting from it.

Put it another way, how would feel if someone joined this forum, posted about this amazing new anti-wrinkle cream and repeatedly bumped the post to keep it near the top? It doesn't matter how good the cream is, that's just spamming the forum and we'd hopefully all ignore the product as a point of principle.

Lots of us are already pimping the movie on our other favoured forums so adding your voice to those would be useful. However clogging up random forums elsewhere, particularly when you seem to have difficulty controlling your temper, won't help and will turn people against the movie.

Everyone here is just stating their opinion. They aren't personally attacking you. Relax. So some may not like your idea... oh well. Some of them do have very good points in their replies.

I, myself, don't visit other forums besides Firefly/Serenity related ones, so this plan doesn't really apply to me. I'd just be preachin' to the choir.

While I kind of like the idea, if it were done on boards you're already established in, I don't like the idea of invading other peoples forum communities. Many communities don't like people coming in with their first and only post being some sort of advertisement. They won't take much of what you're saying if they have no clue who you are, why you're there, and only have a post count as one. You need to introduce yourself to these communities, become one with them, and share your thoughts and feelings about the movie as they get to know you, that way they take what you say more seriously and don't discard it as useless rambling.

As for the original Poster, I personally don't think you're the man for the job. You're responses are harsh, and for the one post it seems you only read the first line and took it as a flame. I don't want a Browncoat with such a short temper who will respond harshly to peoples opinions out there trying to advertise our movie.

Again, I'm sorry...but personally I don't like your attitude, and don't think you'd be right for the job, and that is my opinion. If you don't like it, say hello to Vera.

Instead of 'spamming' other forums with off-topic posts about Firefly/Serenity (which is a good way to get people so pissed they will boycott the movie), I recommend something subtle and a bit mysterious (a la the virual marketing clips from Joss and Summer).

I've changed my sig in my e-mail and all non-Firefly related forums to simply:

"Serenity is coming. 9-30-05"

Gets lots of people curious, and after they ask of course I can tell them all about the BDM.

I'm with Blinker on this one. I'm all for spreading the word, I dropped a line on the old altnet MST3K forum, but "spamming" is ALWAYS bad. Bring people in by showing them that it's the best movie of the year, not by how obsessive the fans are. The cult fanbase is wonderful for us, but it's not going to sell anyone, at least not the people we really want (the true movie lovers and critics, no reason our movie shouldn't rank right up there with the true greats like Amelie and Silence of the Lambs). I want our movie beloved and respected, not clumped in with the rest of the blockbusters this year (I mean come on, The Island??). I'd rather get the minimum $80 million than get dumped in the same bargain bin pile as Battlefeild Earth. I think $80 million is pretty likely, so let's focus on telling people how good the movie is, not finding ways to stuff it in the populus's faces.

Aww thanks Starrbaby, that's okay...seeing his later behaviour, I realised his opinion really wasnt worth taking into account!

I've kind of skimmed through this thread, so if this has been said, sorry for the repeat.

The thread starter is Tonay. For those of you who don't know, Tonay is a notorious troll, both at AICN and the BC board. He has been banned so many times at the BC board I think S_L has lost count. Pay no heed to this troll, and maybe he'll go away. Or not, but don't feed him, 'cause he's a hungry little troll.

Q: What do you have when you are holding two little green balls in your hand.
A: Kermit's undivided attention.
