RAGINGRIVER

I apologize for the following SPOILERS but I just saw a press screening of "Serenity" and was wondering if anyone could answer my questions?

*****

I'm new on this board after having spent the summer becoming a complete WHEDONITE and have, along with my entire family, become ADDICTED to "Firefly." However, I don't know if the theater was too loud to hear certain bits of dialogue or if it just completely went over the top of my head, but I was somewhat confused by the plot of the film.

1) Was The Operative assigned to locate and capture River based on our prior knowledge that she is a fugtive and missing military weapon, OR does the Alliance KNOW she has visions of Miranda that could reveal their secrets?

2) In the first scenes of the movie they address that River is pyschic, BUT is this the only motivation they have for tracking her down? Because she has the potential to reveal the REAVER mystery? Or are her visions of Miranda purely coincidental to the search we understood was taking place in the series?

2) The subliminal message in the "commercial" that triggered River's "Miranda" fears. Was this an Alliance tactic designed to activate her deadly skills (making it easier to find her), or was it merely subliminal messaging that made her fear those in the bar as Reavers?

3) I vaguely remembering a line that Mal said concerning River's fears of reavers being the cause of her craziness. Is this line meant specifically for the purposes of the film, or has the Reaver mystery been whats scared her all along?

4) By film's end, is River still the same River we knew? There is a line which tells us she is still psychic, but does she still have the same issues with her being unable to push back her fears?

5) FINAL question...I promise. LOL! A friend who came with me heard something completly different than I did during the Opeartive's last scene. Did he tell Mal that he had informed the Allaince that he killed River and Simon (thus taking them off the fugitives list) or did he tell Mal that the Alliance had given up their search of them?

All in all, as soon as I can put the puzzle pieces together I can say it's been my favorite movie this year. It was great to see these characters in action again, even though I've only finished the series about a month ago...some here have been waiting since its original run so I can only imagine the anticipation.

The only complaint I have about the film is it's use of Reavers as the main plotline. Having read some reviews and seen the commercials and such, I had hoped it would help to resolve alot with the River mystery. Instead it seemed to add just another twist to her abilities. I thought the Reavers were made to sound a little TOO sci-fi (I loved their original description and it felt more real) and were featured more prominently than I would have preferred, but thats just a small quibble.

As long as I can find out HOW the three parties (Alliance, Serenity, Reavers) played togther it will be enough for me to shell out my paycheck this weekend on more tickets :)

Thanks to anyone who can help me out. I appreciate it.

They suspect that she will have knowledge of something - the Operative doesn't know what but it is probable that higher powers suspect.

We don't know, they probably wanted her anyway because of the effort and expense they put into 'making' her.

The former

I have no idea what you are refering to here so can't offer a suggestion

She is now more dangerous to her enemies because she has all the same powers but is sane and can therefore use them whenever and against whoever she wishes.

Neither, he told them that he thought they were no longer a threat but couldn't promise that the Alliance would agree with him.

I can't promise that all of these answers are correct - they are from my memory and understanding of the plot and there were some very confusing elements to it - even for die-hard fans. A few people I know have seen it more than once and they have all said that they understood more the second time round so I shouldn't worry too much.

Of course, us Browncoats do think too much so that could be the reason!

Thanks! I think when I see it again on Friday, everything will flow much smoother. You're right though, I'm probably thinking way too much into this! LOL!

One more question though. You said by film's end, River is sane and can use her powers on whoever and whenever she wants. What was it exactly that freed her then from the mental condition she had which prevented her from restraining fear? Did they say at all?

I'm not sure that they said but it was definitely implied that it was because she dealt with her traumas and what was giving her nightmares. You know the kind of 'pop-psychology' stuff, but what the hell it was cool and the thought of River off the leash is fandabbydozy!
