Just thought you would all enjoy this.

With the box office returns looking a little dissappointing, it's good to remember that cash is coming in for Serenity in a few other ways.

Namely, Firefly.

I introduced a friend to the 'Verse about a month ago when the trailer came out. He's now seen the flick twice, and yesterday left the office searching for the Firefly DVD set.

He couldn't find one. In New York City. Everyplace is sold out.

It may not affect the box office, but when the execs start thinking about how profitable a possible sequel will be, they won't just be looking at the box office.

Thanks for the story. I've seen at least one friend become a hard-core Browncoat on the basis of the movie (she's come over twice since then to watch more eps). It's nice to know that it's not just Firefly-to-Serenity in terms of fan trajectory. Serenity is now leading people to Firefly.

But I do have to quibble on one point. It does matter how much this movie makes at the box office. Universal is trying to gauge how many people would like turn up for sequels. For said sequels to be successful, they must appeal to a broader market than just us Browncoats. Universal is going to take a good hard look at box office numbers to gauge whether or not a Firefly franchise can do that.

Completely Understood. It definately does matter what the box office ends up being. For them to keep putting movies in the theater they need to know it's going to be profitable there.

All I meant to say was that, as Joss put it, this movie is going to get handed around a lot on DVD. Just as the FireFly DVD's served as the device to make more Browncoats, so is this movie. In the end, if the movie can make a big enough profit, through any means: international Box Office, Domestic, DVD...we might see the 'Verse in some form again.

My hope is Serenity shows up with a decent showing in the Box Ofiice. If the DVD sells really well on the back of good word of mouth, (That's GOOD word of mouth, not DESPERATE word of mouth. Tell your friends about hte flick, don't poke them with sticks until they go.) they may feel the installed-fan base has expanded enough to expect a larger opening weekend on Serenity2.

The other thing to think about is the fact that the Firefly DVDs are money in FOX's pockets, not Universal. The BDM has to make Universal money before they'll greenlight a sequel.

And don't forget that it's going to be important for the NBC Universal's movie division to be able to pad their own pockets before they'll likely greenlit another one... Think about this, each division's chief is like their own fiefdom, why would you green light a movie that's not making you much money even though it makes another division money. That's great news for the company, but if you can find movies that will make you money - and let you keep your job, I think the decision is "easy".

If DVD sales is important enough, maybe at least there will be a straight to DVD sequel... sort of like "Bring it on 2", or "Starship Troopers 2"...

On another thought, maybe there can be some sort of XBox game tie-in... Hey, how owould lyou like to be Inari for an hour or two everyday of the week?!

While it is true that the money from the series is going into Fox's pocket, the point still remains that if they see more people have bought the DVD, the franchise they have their hands on has gained greater value due to greater popularity. So when a sequel's in question, yes, they'll look at the money they gained, but if they also see a spike in sales of the series that spawned the movie, that WILL have an affect.
