Hey, so a long-time lurker (and therefore Surely Not A True Fan? No, I am, but I like to listen) here, unlurking to say:

Anyone hear James King (BBC Radio One film critic)'s show today? He re-iterated how much he loves the movie and mentioned that some people had been a bit mad that he compared Firefly to the OC. He kind of said, so far as I understand, that he loves the writing on both shows, although accepts that they're very different. Anyway, he was giving great publicity and a big shout out to the film, so a good thing on balance? Particularly from such a non-genre outlet.

They also had a listener review of the film from some Joe Average, who went on about how you didn't need to be a fan to see it, and the writing was excellent, although he criticised the opening mule chase (he called it a hovercraft, grr)- what?!

I was just about to do a thread related to this! So I shall stick my scribbles here instead:

Just heard James King's review of Serenity on Jo Whiley's Radio 1 show.

He gave a very good review, emphasising the acting and the 'emotional heart' of the movie over the 'slightly ropey' effects. Good story, characters not unlike (inevitable mention) Han Solo and his bittered disillusionment, mentioned the Western overtones. Best person in it, he said, was Chiwetel Ejiofor, but he had praise for Nathan and Summer too.

He also said that while the average person will like it as a good sci-fi movie, Whedon fans will think Christmas has come early.

Four stars out of five.

Woo!

I shall see about getting a sound clip of this later... it came on about 2 hours 15 mins into the show, so we can track it down on Listen Again on the BBC Radio 1 site.

If you can be arsed to listen to his whole show go here and click LISTEN:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/oneclick/film/

He also does some stuff on Nightwatch if anyone's into that.

But you can't fast forward, and if your connection cuts out, you have to start listening from the beginning again. You might be better off waiting for some ridiculously altruistic type (above) to get a clip together.

Heh.

With any luck, Listen Again should work properly for Jo Whiley's show. Otherwise... it'll be slightly vexing.

YAY. Cool, I've never listened to OneClick Radio 1 before. All movie tunes and reviews this hour, is it? Well, I'm listening right now; almost up to the listener review.

Thanks so much (((RelFexive)))
