I have not heard much talk about these guys, but they’re really what I’m interested in at the moment. What will their role be in the future? The operative was not related to them at all, his job was simply containment of the big secret. Even with the leader of that facility dead and the operative letting them go there is no reason for the Hands of Blue guys give up, in a way they are the opposite of the operative anyway, they wanted River alive at all costs, he wanted her dead at all costs.

Further I’m still not sure why River was in that facility, we know that they made psychics, we don’t know why, we know that they programmed them for combat, but we also don’t know why. Why have your assassin and psychic program be the same? It seems like it would be much better to have them separate.

Further if she was just an escaped test subject for those things there would be no reason to get her alive, killing her would work just as well to keep it secret, and “star pupil” or not she could be replaced. There has to be more going on, and I want to know what it is.

On a side note, did anyone notice that in the episode Serenity when Simon is telling how River got out he never actually lies? He just leaves out some very important parts. The parts he leaves out definitely make you think his role was very different, but he doesn’t actually lie. It’s always been my experience that that is the best way to mislead people.

EMBERS

they were in the comic book, and I was kind of shocked by what was under the ordinary 'suit'!

I'm sure they'll be in the sequel, I'm thinking they may be the keepers of the corporate secrets (of the Blue Sun corporation)
but what do I know?

They don't seem to be directly connected with the military, but they do have a lot of power (influence w/Government if they aren't a Gov't branch)

At least I'm confident they'll appear in future comic books!

I always figured the Hands of Blue were affiliated with big business... likely Blue Sun, like you said. After the entire deal with pax in Serenity, it's quite reasonable that there are a few big companies (or one monopoly) lined up for those lucrative government contracts.

And developing a mind-altering drug to engender loyalty? That has to be worth billions. I know in Alpha Centauri, I much prefer sending out a mind-control probe over flooding the enemy with mind worms and locusts. ...though, the latter is still fun. KF

ZOE: Preacher, don’t the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing?
BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps...

Maybe the spy business? Or hell, an operative like the operative?

Joss never really answered the River question...just the reason of why they're trying to kill her.
