I ran across this page: http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/release.html at The Numbers.com, and was impressed to see that Serenity is the top grossing film for its open date. That doesn't tell the whole story of the film, but it does say a number of things, not the least of which is that it was probably a good date to position the film.

Whatever else, don't despair, people. This was a little movie that shouldn't have, and it turned out it could. What happens next will be up to fate and the good folks at Universal. But Firefly is still #4 on Amazon's most popular DVDs list ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/new-for-you/top-sellers/-/dvd/all
/ref=pd_ts_h/102-0823758-1120112
), and #1 of Television DVDs. People who didn't know have seen the film and are buying the series. We all have copies...who else is buying them? We're all spending our extra $$ on seeing the movie over and over and giving tickets away to people. It's got to be people who are seeing the film and wanting to know what it's all about.

I didn't really understand what "slow burn" might look like, but I think that's what it looks like. Much as we might want immediate results and the money truck backing up to Universal Studios and dramatic news stories about this movie that came out of nowhere...those expectations are what's getting people down. I think the story of how this movie is doing/did isn't going to be able to be written for a while, yet.

Cheers! (And see you at the theater!)

That might be good if Universal is giving the theatre owners a bigger cut of the pie starting from yesterday. You see, the problem is the theatre owner ultimately - depending on contractual relationships with the studios - can still decide to do *less* with Serenity if it doesn't get them enough butts into the seats. Out of the 4 major films released that week. Into the blue is the only one that is doing the worst. Per theatre take:

History of V $1000
Greatest Game $608
Serenity $540
Into the blue $475

I mean, without more eyeballs in their own theatre, the theatre owners can yank it and show something else that will get them more butts; - or they can cut the number of showings and show something else, etc.

I've already seen the theatre here cut Serenity down to 4 shows a day and relegated it to the far corner screen in the megaplex. But that's just what I've seen.

Given the freedom to do so, anarchy will result in an organic organization unto itself.
