For some reason, "10 years" was the number of years I have heard for how long Universal has to develope Firefly/Serenity films, and then Fox gets back the rights to produce TV shows, but then I hear the "10 years" isn't right, so how long does Universal have before Firefly could return to the small screen, miracles and all?

FOX has the rights to the FireFly TV series for 10 years. Unless they sell the rights no one else can make a FireFly TV series for 10 years, and Joss doesn't want to work with FOX again.

I think I heard that Nathan came up with that rumor. If not, only 7 more years....

HELL'S KITTEN

I've never seen "10 years" stated by anyone who would know (i.e. Joss or Chris Buchanan). As far as I can recall, the 10 year thing was a "best guess" that developed along the lines of this: FOX has a TV contract with Joss which controls the TV rights to Firefly and Universal picked up the movie rights to Firefly. The hope was that Serenity would do well enough to allow for two more movies. In the amount of time it would take to do all three movies, the rights that FOX holds would expire; I don't know where this statement came from and if it was made by someone with the facts. It was then theorized that it would take 10 years to make all three movies.

That's how I remember it, anyway. It should be pointed out that movie rights are way different from television rights, and that broadcasting reruns is a different deal than broadcasting new episodes.

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

Just to expand on this, Joss' contract was with 20th Century Fox Television, not the FOX network. He terminated that contract with 1 year left but if he went back into television within that time, he had to go back to 20th CFT.

20th CFT owns the rights to Firefly, they would not expire. They also own the rights to Buffy and Angel.

The FOX television network had the rights for airing Firefly, but when they cancelled the show, they lost the rights. That is why Joss was able to shop the series around. At this point, the FOX network has no association with Firefly.
