OK, the Operative. He just walks away with two core character murders on his belt because he suddenly loses faith in the Alliance?

I say let's get us an ear and send it back to the Alliace with a ransom note attached! Who's with me?

Muahahahaha!

Well, only one core character murder, and indirectly at that.

Select to view spoiler:

The Reavers killed Wash. Of course, without the Operative he might not have been in that situation, but in this case the Operative only set the events in motion.

The Operative did send the ships that killed Book and the other "Friends of Mal", and certainly bears responsibility for it. However, he redeemed himself by saving the rest of the crew when he could easily have ordered them killed. Besides, Book had already avenged himself.

Mal is not the most forgiving of men, but even he would probably think twice about killing a man who had just spared him and his friends.

If you're thinking about why he didn't kill him in the fight in Mr. Universe's basement, others have answered that in other threads. He had already disabled him, and he wanted to complete the man's destruction by showing him how badly his loyalties had been misplaced. It worked, too -- by the end, there was "nothing left to see" of the Operative.

It was as devastating as if he'd showed the Pope there was no God.

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.

I dont want the Operative dead because I need him in the next movie to prove my theory. The theory of course that Book was an operative. If we see him in the next movie as something similar to a shepard than I think this will solidify my beliefs. Once we see that I wouldnt mind seeing take a bigger beating than he got in the first movie.
