This might sound bad but I just watch The Train Job(no thats not the bad part), and I gotta say that no matter how often I see the part where Mal kicks that dude through the engine, I cant stop laughing. Then when he brings over the other dude and starts into his speech again and gets interrupted I just lose it. Is that bad, should I seek help for this?

Not at all.

We *all* laugh at that scene. It's just funny. I mean, sure, there's a guy kicked through an engine and splattered into teeny little pieces, but in a funny way.

See, I've always imagined what that night would have been like...

Mal: Aw, c'mon Kaylee.
Kaylee: *frown* I ain't talkin' to you, Captain.
Mal: But...
Kaylee: *stubborn* I'm busy.
Mal: *pout* Mei mei?
Kaylee: Look, I'm busy, okay? I've got all these bits of blood to clean out of this engine, you know how hard it is to scrape gore off a turbine?
Mal: I didn't mean it?
Kaylee: You ever do this again, I'll be kicking *you* through the engine, dong ma?

*~*~*
"Your toes are in the sand."
"And your head's up your..."
"Hey!"

No you should not seek help, this is just classic Joss humor for you. You learn to appreciate it over time and never get enough of it. That's why Firefly as a whole never gets tired or old and that's the very reason you keep on watching that same episode and laugh every single time. Your not the only one.

That scene is what made “Firefly” for me when I caught it on FOX in ’02. Don’t worry, you’re meant to laugh.

That scene just thumbs it’s nose at the “noble but stupid” heroes that usually populate sci-fi (see: any Star Trek series--not that there’s anything wrong with that), the ones that seize the moral high ground even if it will clearly hurt them. I mean, anyone who’s watched sci-fi knew that by convention, Mal would let Crow go and a little later in the season Crow would return for revenge, but Mal had to let him go despite that “because it was the right thing to do.” And just when you think he’s going to deliver some clichéd line about mercy--*kick*

Right then and there, I knew “Firefly” was something different and special. The hero’s acting rationally! And it’s funny--cuz you know Crow was expecting him to follow the “good guy” convention, too, which is why he was so uppity to a guy holding the power of life and death over him.

And then going through the same spiel again with the next thug...That almost had me in tears. Such a great scene.

That was one of the turning points in my opinion of this series. My initial thoughts were "Oh man, another geeky spacey show that I will have to ignore." When Mal kicked the guy through the engine instead of letting him go (creating an opportunity for the guy to come back and beat on the Big Damn Crew with muscley revenge) I was like "Maybe this isn't just another futuristic freak show... any normal writer would've had Mal do the noble thing just to have it bite him in the ass in a later episode." Mmm Joss is a devil with a halo.

StakeTheLurk, what you wrote nails exactly my reaction to that episode. I too was one of the lucky few who saw it on first airing. I was enjoying the show up to that point, but when that scene hit, I was hooked for life.

I'm right there with ya!
