I thought it would be better to make it clearer that this is the Team Random/Serenity² thread, hence the slight title change.

And now, just to make sure....

Maybe there would be leess confusion if you stopped using Serenity² in the thread titles! Just a thought...

OK, the wackiness may now recommence! Hope CMS had a great birthday.

Thanks to all for the birthday wishes! I had a lovely birthday, thank you thank you.

Lims-LOVED the song!

Safe-what on EARTH does that mean? I think I know what a jib is. Was your grandmother a pirate?

I am high on cake and ice cream today. I had entirely tooooo much sugar yesterday.

Ooh, and my very favourite brother got me Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on DVD. Yay for me!

Afternoon guys...

10 days left! 0.0 WOOT! (I'm still trying to get my head around it.. It's crazy.. *is nervous*)

Keeping it random:

Do we have a flag?

I know the Serenitree has one, (Thatweirdgirl made one a while back methinks), but is there an official Team random flag? I don't recall seeing one....

Is it a good idea to have one?

Of course!

I normally take WAY too much camera film along with me to conventions.

(I'll be like a crazy Scottish papparazzi Browncoat or something.)

Taking photographs is an important part of the con experience. I like to capture the spirit of the event. (Also, it helps me to remember what happened, cause I'm usually walking about in a daze during the whole thing..)

Seriously though, I'm planning to put my pics on line this time if they're good enough.

Glad your birthday was fun, CMS!

As for a Team Random flag, I know there's a logo because I regularly see it on my official coffee mug. Perhaps someone could mount one of the t-shirts on a staff?

It's have to be one of the t-shirts that say "Reavers" on the back, seeing as that's the official unofficial Team Random motto.

Cos-Yay for the Scottish Paparazzi!
Make sure you get lots of pictures of the Randomites, too, not just the BDHs.

I'll be arriving early. Around 9am - 11am. (Roughly.)

Maybe Fray can whip up a quick flag for us, since it was her shop.

Ooh, can we start griping about mangled/redundant/garbled language? My first vote is for "whether or not."

Now, I must share with all of you, or I'll eat it all and get very very ill.

Hee; I think the whole plural vs. possessive thing is water too deep for a distressingly large number of people. Some people think it bad form to go all critical on spelling and grammar, but c'mon! When you're using the written word to express your thoughts, spelling and grammar are important, gorramit! I'm hardly qualified to teach the subject, but the stuff I see every day .... I'm especially freaked out when I see glaring errors in the local newspaper. These people are supposed to be professional users of the language?

I could get revved up on a rant about the whole "give marks for effort, don't put too much importance on results or someone's esteem might get lowered" school of thought in teaching/raising kids, but I fear I'd start sounding like a grumpy ol' curmudgeon instead of the sweet young thing I really am.

Heh.

Serenity, Not my Nana. My "jib" Grandma is my mom's mom. She passed away this summer. That was my trip to New Brunswick.

I've actually had chocolate vodka. It's not as chocolatey as one would think. I like the Vanilla vodka or schnapps in vanilla coke. Once again, on it's own, not a vanillay as one would think.

Crown Royal or Canadian Club and ginger ale, is my preferance.

It's tiring, sneezing and nose-blowing every five minutes. And it's dehydrating too.

Lovely, ain't it?

I've had quite a few little tantrums today from sneezing interrupting my train of thought and my concentration It's frustrating!

Anyway... what's wrong with "whether or not" exactly? I confess I don't know... and I'm sure I must've used the phrase at some point...

Otherwise, my written grammar and spelling tends to be quite good. I even use the right punctuation and so forth in text messages!

The problem is the "or not" is already implicit in the word; saying "whether or not" is redundant. It's a tiny thing, to be sure, but now and again it bugs me. The main reason I brought it up was the relevance to the "one way ticket there and back" semi-rant some posted earlier (I'm too lazy to go back and look it up).

Bravo on texting proper English (if that's not absurd coming from an American ). I can well understand how bandwidth charges add up, it's the same for classified newspaper ads, but elsewhere? Full words, please. I don't understand all the odd spellings and numbers-as-letters gimmicks, nor will I expend any effort trying to puzzle them out when I see posts made in that "lingo." I'm far too curmudgeonly for that!

Heh, curmudgeonly. It's a good word.

Exactly how would one wrongly use "whether or not" anyway? Whenever I try to think of how, I get something like "I'll take my umbrella whether it's raining or not" and I don't see how that's wrong... so what am I missing? Am I using it right in this case or what?

As for the "one way ticket" thing, I believe Justin Hawkins, he of The Darkness fame, has admitted that yes, it doesn't really makes sense, but it also kinda does.

After all, it is a ticket to "hell and back", which is one journey in and of itself... If it had been a one way ticket to hell and then he came back, that would not make sense.

....maybe.

That made my head ache. Ow.

I believe the proper usage in your example, which admittedly sounds pompous as all hell and is probably why it's not used as intended, is, "I'm bringing my umbrella regardless of whether it rains." I just avoid using the word in cases like that: "I'm bringing my umbrella, even if it doesn't rain."

Language is a mutable thing, and it makes sense that awkward usages die off and are replaced by ones which trip more easily off the tongue--but then I'd be deprived of my fun as Obscure Grammar Nazi.
