AMYGDALA

Thought I'd start up this thread for people (ie: me) who had only just seen the film, so that they could vent their reactions without feeling like it had all been said before.

So I just saw Serenity. But rants about living in a small country in the ass-end of nowhere don't belong here. Ahem. Bear in mind these are first impressions based on gut reaction and are therefore nescessarily either logical or coherent.

Heard stuff said along the lines of "this movie wasn't my TV show". I get that, but for me it *was* firefly - in parts. In particular the sequence just after the credits and the one right at the end brought it all back so vividly I was close to tears. I thought the beginning was particularly clever because it evoked the whole firefly feel, while at the same time allowing us to get used to the slightly different looks of the characters. Anyone one else get a little breathless over Nathan's haircut?. Moving on.

The whole Pax storyline grated me a little - felt too B-grade sci-fi for me. In fact there was a whole middle sequence that felt a bit off, although there were moments of pure joy (Kaylee's goodbye to Simon deteriorating into engine-speak, Mal's admission to Inara that she screws up his head, Mal's double take when Jayne says he'll take over the ship). The apocalyptic Whedon-style death and mayhem after helped erase some of the cliched feel, and then it was pure firefly again.

I loved the ending sequence. I almost wish it wasn't that good, because it reminded me how much I loved my little TV show. Now I can picture that crew in my head, off on their new adventures in their battered ship, slowly healing their wounds. Maybe I'll get to see some of those new adventures sometime. I hope so, but if not, I guess that's okay too.

The theatre was full of geeks like me, we all laughed and gasped in the same parts. I just wish there were more of us...
