MOREFIREFLY

This is my first post here so here's the background story...

My first encounter with FireFly was actually the Serenity movie. I was blown away and promptly jumped online to learn all I could about it.

Imagine my joy to find out it was based on a TV series. Then imagine my horror moments later when I discovered that the series was cancelled after only one season. I don't think I've ever been so excited and so disappointed in the same breath!

Regardless I immediately launched my BitTorrent client and tracked down the entire series. After watching every episode I had to see the movie again. I also embarked on a mission to encourage all my friends and family to go see the BDM.

My very next step was to order a set of FireFly DVD's (to support the cause). Naturally I will also be buying the Serenity DVD the moment it is released.

Now the reason for this post...

After watching the series on my PC I was looking forward to re-watching them in glorious surround sound in my lounge room.

Today my shiny FireFly DVD set arrived. I raced down to the store and purchased a large bag of snacks and sat down with my wife to re-watch FireFly on the big TV with the Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround system.

I was a tad disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a great show the second time around but why is it only in Dolby Surround, not 5.1 Dolby Digital. I realise the series was made a few years ago but Dolby Digital has been around for a while now and plenty of other shows, especially Sci-Fi shows, make full use of the surround sound technology.

I don't mean to sound too bummed about this, I was just a little surprised is all. The DVD's will still take pride of place on the shelf, after lending them to convert all my friends and family, I was just looking forward to a different experience.

Well that's my 2 cents worth, and for 4 cents I'd also like to say, for the record, that my first preference is for more FireFly episodes, my second prferences is for a movie sequel, and my third preference is anything else FireFly/Serenity. Actually that's probably more like about 6 cents but who's counting?

I don't recall many shows doing Dolby 5.1 in 2002.

What other shows from that time period were filmed in 5.1?

Farscape - Season 1 - Filmed 1999, DVD released 2003 - Dolby 5.1

Star Trek Voyager - Season 1 - Filmed 1995, DVD released 2004 - Dolby 5.1

Stargate SG1 - Season 3 - Filmed 1999, DVD released 2003 - Dolby 5.1

All these shows were filmed before FireFly but their DVD's were released after 2003 so I guess we just missed out on the Dolby 5.1 era.

Additional...

If FireFly was re-released with 5.1 how many browncoats would buy it again? Could be a good way to raise more funds for a new series?

Another thing (sorry to keep going on about this)...

The 20th Century Fox intro at the start of each DVD is in 5.1 Surround, so why not the rest of it?

I guess the obvious answer is that Fox didn't want to spend any extra money on re-mastering the sound for the DVD release. Pity.

That's pretty much it. Remixing to 5.1 costs some coin, and I'm sure Fox doesn't/didn't want to spend the money. I will say that the Dolby Digital pro-logic sound on the DVDs is actually very good, although it's no match for a good 5.1 release. I'd probably re-buy the set in 5.1, because I'm a 5.1, and particularly, a DTS snob, but I'm sure that for the vast majority of people out there, 5.1 doesn't mean much, or they don't even know what it is.

Book: Very specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzy around the area of kneecaps.

Oh well, at least the BDM will be 5.1 (I assume) and if we ever get another series hopefully that will be too. My sub-woofer will just have to sulk in the corner for now...lol

Well, seeing as I am behind the times, and only have Pro-Logic, I guess I don't know what I'm missing!

Done well, and with the right equipment, Dolby Digital 5.1 sounds awesome.

The best I've heard so far is the Eagles Farewell 1 tour filmed in Melbourne, Australia. I was never a huge Eagles fan but that DVD sounds so good I just can't stop playing it. But I'm getting off topic so I'll shut up now.
