The overseas totals have finally been added.

As of 11/15
Domestic: $25,354,970
+ Overseas: $10,933,307
= Worldwide: $36,288,277

Compare to the week before:

Domestic: $25,200,915
+ Overseas: $10,403,110
= Worldwide: $35,604,025

Serenity is pulling in about $9,000 per day in the US this week, so we really can't expect much more... so we need to look overseas.

It opened up last weekend in New Zealand at #3, bringing in $125,216 and with openings still to come in several European countries, I think there's still a chance to hit $39 million at the box office.

Overseas Breakdown (per boxofficemojo):

Australia (9/29/05) $2,391,528
France (10/19/05) $530,411
New Zealand (11/10/05) $125,216
Portugal (10/6/05) $220,460
Russia (10/13/05) $1,681,060
Spain (10/21/05) $990,341
Switzerland (10/19/05) $23,648
United Kingdom (10/7/05) $4,771,466

Serenity will certainly make back its budget, especially with the DVD coming out soon. We should be happy with the Box Office results so far. It is by no means a huge sucsess, But it is also by no means a flop, and i see the results as very respectable, and i think Universal should too.

In recent times, there has been a hell of a lot of films that get released but never make back their production budget, "The Island" and "Stealth" come to mind.

Lets be glad that Serenity is not one of them!

Man, and I liked both of those. Either most people have crappy taste in movies, or I do!

Actually The Island made up for most of its gross with overseas, netting 124 million overseas and 160 million worldwide. I'm still hoping to reach budget with box office sales, but all the overseas countries are slowing down, so it should be real close.

I never saw The Island or Stealth at the movies. Much like a lot of people with Serenity. I will watch them both at home. People are mainly seeing sequels of established films and children's films at the movies and waiting for others on DVD. Got to justify spending al that money on the big screens and 5.1 setups I guess.

On top of that, is it just me or has going to the cinema gotten expensive?!

Was a time when I could get a ticket, popcorn and a drink for under a tenner.

Not any more! Tickets where I am in the UK cost £6.50 (the cost of a DVD in some shops!), popcorn is £3-4 and a drink is £2-3 - it's ridiculous!

I never bother with food or drinks anymore - it's just too expensive!

I just hide a cheap Subway meal and sneak it in. ;)

For a family of 4, I have to budget $35-40 for movies and snacks...and that doesn't include dinner. Maybe my family is spoiled. My 12 yr old is hounding me about Harry Potter now...

I'm just happy that those Entertainment Books (that you usually get for about $20) have about 30 coupons for Regal Cinemas for $6 movies.

A matinee costs $6.50 for pete's sake.

Maybe Germany will add some reasonable amount to the total....I still have some hopes, because the movie magazines all commented very positively on the movie (and the just released Firefly-DVDs, wich came right in time to pull of some cool cross-references inbetween (almost only very, very positive and some mediocre stuff) reviews for both and there will be some TV movie magazines to cover Serenity this week and the next.

And on top of that Fox and Universal Germany made some cooperation happen, when they prescreened the film with the pilot or some episodes from the series beforehand in some cities in Germany (we even had comlete nights with all firefly-episodes in a row and the complete film afterwards!!). And Fox and Universal are making a deal, that if you buy the German DVD-Box and see the film, you can send in both tickets and get back an amount of 5 Euros! When you go to the right places, that would mean you get to see the film (which officially opens on Thursday this week), almost for free!!!

So the battle over here will start just now ;)

In New York or Chicago, that would buy you the tickets, and snacks would cost another $28-35 if you don't sneak them in.

Does anyone know if the budget included the money for the making of the DVDs or will that increase the budget even more?

No... the budget listed doesn't include costs for creating the DVD... but that really is minimal. I think DVD profits are huge.

Discs cost pennies to make... and thousands can be distributed cheaper than moving movie reels.
