One of the main things that bothered me about the cancellation of Firefly ( besides the obvious) is that we never got to see the Relationship between Book and Mal develop.

I mean we got glimpes of his relations with others. With Jayne we saw them work out, talk and even joke together. That surprised me but also put a smile on my face.

With Inara they seemed comfortable around each other. Kaylee seemed to like him ( then again she pretty muched liked everybody), Simon didnt mind him as for River as long as he kept his hair in place all was ok.

Unless she was seeing his before Shepherd face.

In the series they did show concern for one another, when Book was shot and needed help in SAFE and when Mal was recovering in OUT OF GAS Book and Mal seemed quite concenred for one another.

What got me about the scene in Haven is when they where having a discussion about the Operative they just seemed comfortable.

Book was smoking his pipe and they both just seemed amicable and all. Even when Mal joked about getting another one of Books sermons it was done half serious and with less hostility in the series.

He even mentioned how he relied on Books advice.

sniff

Later when Book is dying with the fall of Haven and Mal tells him he cant die because hes looking forward to more sermons.

Book tells him ( paraphasing) 'You cant tell me what to do boy! Am not one of your crew.'

I dunno, with the boy it was like a parent telling of his child.

Maybe it was me.
