So I wonder if Joss's plan is (or was) to kill off all or most of our Serenity BDH's over time. Consider his revelation "there will be more sweet character deaths...er developments" in the next darkhorse comic series.

I wouldn't put it past him planning to emotionaly bleed us flans to death over the course of a trilogy. Heck, seeing where we are now, he might be planning to get it all over with in the upcoming Firefly paperback he's releasing in Feb '06.

I think there's only one answer.

Jayne, go get Vera. We gotta put Joss right about a few things...

America loves a winner!

While I didn't exactly care for how everything played out in Serenity, I didn't hate it, or Joss. It's when I take into consideration of his past works ( Buffy, Angel ) that I get most annoyed. I'd think more of Joss (yeah, like he realy cares ) if he stayed his lust for killing off of main characters, from here on out, for us Firefly fans. I GET it that Joss is all consumed w/ death ( of Buffy, Buffy again, Doyle,Fred,Angel(the series) Firefly,(the series), etc... ) and all, but at some point, the fans (I think) deserve some illusion of perminance. Otherwise, everything he does will become just one big joke.... " Gee, why get invested w/ character A or B , when we know one (or both) will end up dying a horrible death and leave yet another void in the story? "

Spare me the ' Oh, it's just how Joss is..', or ' He writes about real life...' blah blah blah. I know, I GET it. But must he be so damned predictable ?

I'd feel better if we could at least get tired of some characters BEFORE they die off, is all I'm saying. Not have all of them croak before we ever got to know them in the 1st place.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Aren't we overreacting a bit here? 2!
And if he does do something big like that, I want him to do it on film, with the actors, dont you agree?
ah, well, whatever Joss does I have faith in him.

I have faith in Joss. And I loved Serenity.
Honestly, for the type of film Serenity was, someone needed to die, someone we liked from the get-go. And we needed a 'lamb to the slaughter', and he gave us that.

Don't mean we have to like it all that much. :D

My post may have sounded bitter (lol ), but I'm not bitter at all. I didn't mind the deaths in Serenity a bit. I'm a sadistic button pusher just like Joss.

I was just curious to know if Joss, feeling like the movies were going to be the 'be-all/end-all' future of the Firefly verse...if he didn't think killing-off everybody would give him the narrative finality he's known for. I know given the proper opportunity, that gorram overgrown elf would kill Mal off in a winking heartbeat.

Mal already died once, possibly twice.

Fingers crossed that it earned him a breather.

oo, interesting snippetty-bit - Empire magazine just voted Mal the 'most interesting character' 2005. Awaiting results for Cosmo's 'rear of the year'

personally I expect to see all 9 of our BDHs in the eventual sequel...
even though a couple of them may only be in flash backs or dream sequences
(I've got my fingers crossed for clones and/or androids however...)

I went into the movie knowing someone was going to bite it...considering Joss's history I wasn't surprised when we lost 2! Doesn't make me less mad! lol. But as for killing everyone off, no I think Joss wouldn't go that far you know. Maybe one or two more...which is still a bit much in my opinion.

I have to agree that joss is predictable in the killing department. he needs to reign it in or people WILL not take the time to invest in his future characters..

Then again, our Firefly crew live a dangerous life. Here's hopin only 1 more at the most gets it. Otherwise where is your story...and you REALLY don't want to bring in new crew and characters. Wouldn't be the same.

It's at least conceivable that one or more of the actors has asked to have their character killed off. I'm not gonna speculate about who that might be, but some actors do get concerned about stereotyping (the Star Trek TOS syndrome).

He’ll probably kill more people off, but not everyone. If he feels he’s got a firm chance at a trilogy, he’ll stay his hand in the second film (I’m guessing), but he’ll kill again in the third one. If he doesn’t feel he’s on as firm footing, he might kill one person per movie. However, I suspect that with the furor over the character deaths and his own stated desire to have Wash & Book appear again in some form, he’ll have to hold back on the death-dealing for a while.

As for the comic books, in the same post where he joked about “some sweet character deaths… I mean moments,” he also said that the comics would take place during the series, making them prequels with all the crew. And unless the BDM’s Kaylee was a clone, that means he can’t kill any of the crew. He might finish off some recurring characters, though (Niska? Saffron? Can’t kill Badger if it’s set before the first comics…)

And as for the illusion of permanence, it should be noted that the only “safe” characters in one of Joss’ universes were the ones with their names in the title (sure, Buffy died but she was always back next season). Which means that the one safe character in any Serenity continuation is Serenity herself. Whatever else happens, the ship’ll make it through.

I doubt he'd kill anyone off in the comics unless the actors drop out of future films. Which I'm not sure they can do since they're under contract supposedly.

Also I don't think the deaths are predictable. I went in knowing that someone might die, but not really expecting it. I still didn't even really believe Book was dead for a while. I really thought that they'd turn around at one point and Book would be lying in the infirmary in a coma or something.

I never saw Wash coming though. I doubt anyone who wasn't spoiled could have seen that coming.

Yeah, Wash's death really got to me. Every time I even think about that "I'm a leaf on the wind..." quote, I nearly break out in tears. Joss better not take away any more of my favorites (and since they are all favorites, that means none).

STORYMARK

I think I feel the opposite of what some of you are saying. I, for one, wouldn't be interested in a show where there was never a chance of any of the characters being killed off. That danger, that feeling of no one being entirely safe, is what makes the drama so much more compelling for me than on other shows. It adds to the realism, not detract from it. A show about a bunch of characters flying around in a rickety space-ship, getting shot at all the time, and dealing with cannibals on a regular basis should involve, at least on rare occasions, death.

And as far as being predictable, I disagree. Everyone dies, so that's predictable. When they do it is what matters, especially in terms of drama. A character dying heroicly, after saving all of his companions from certain death is a good death.

Come to think of it, I have to wonder if the Operative's "This is a good death" bit at the beginning was a way to prepare fans for deaths he knew would upset them.

And realy, for those who say they might not let themselves become attatched to Joss' characters because they might die... that's sad. Would it be worth it to you to never have known Mal, Jane, Inara, River and everyone else, just so you could have avoided seeing Wash and Book die?

Not me.

And, as one last note, I've read somewhere (the visual companion maybe?) that Alan Tudyk had suggested to Joss while they were still shooting the series that Wash would be best character to kill off.

"Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."

My mom's comment just after Simon gets shot while fighting the Reavers: "If everyone dies, I'm going to be very upset!"

Killing off Wash and Book made the idea of everyone dying possible, which made for a lot more suspense.

To me, this is also why it was necessary for the Operative to kill the scientist who had been experimenting on River -- without that scene, when he paralyzes the scientist, I would not have been as freaked out when he did the same move on Mal!

PSYCHOTICBRIDE

Yeah, I'm with all those who supported the deaths in the movie. It's more realistic and it adds to the suspense. I mean, I always have a great appreciation for a series where I can't be sure if every character's safe. If you ask me, leaving all the characters alone is predictable in it's own right. There's a lot of shows I watch, where I see the ad, and they imply that someone might get the ax, and I just go "Psh! They're not really going to kill anyone. They don't have the guts." And it ruins the suspense. To use an example from a different series, one of the reasons I love Lost is that everyone's fate is in question, and nobody's safe, and that point is abundantly clear. It keeps you on the edge and keeps you coming back for more. That's how I feel about Firefly/Serenity. That element of uncertainty just enhances the experience. Not that I think there should be too many more deaths (there will probably be at least one more if he does a trilogy, and I shall brace myself for that), or that all shows should have deaths, but the shows that do have deaths or the potential for them have always enticed me.

I think I just parroted some other people's points there, but oh well.
