stocking stitch is when you knit on the front (right) side and purl on the back (wrong) side so that you get the nice, flat knit in the front and the inside out sweater look in the back.

This website might help you out:

There are helpful videos, also.

EMBERS

and be sure to remember that the hat does NOT have to be perfect...Jayne's hat from his mother had stray ends of yarn sticking out...

plus in intermitten scenes it has stray bits of straw sticking out too (LOL)

Just have fun with it and don't expect perfection
(at least mine is full of errors and everyone always admires it anyway)

Embers is right.

My problem is that I've made so many that I've gotten really good at it and I have to try to make it NOT look perfect. It's kind of hard. But it's fun!

And you're welcome!

Oh believe me, I'm far from expecting it to be perfect. I knew that as soon as I got the yarn colors picked out. The yellow is the only color that matches from Jayne's.

But thats fine by me.

Oh, and CMS..if I would have known you made your own hats, I would have paid you to make this for me lol

I made mine on a knitting loom. This was my first attempt. Too many orange rows, but it was still fun.

My second try was a child's size and it turned out great.

Sorry, I don't have a loom small enough for the action figure :(

If you ever though knitting with needles was cool, but too hard. Try a loom. Even I can use them!

My colours aren't exactly the same as Jayne's, but they're as close as I could get. I'll have to find a picture.

I haven't tried but I bet I could! That'd be fun!

I'd have to go buy smaller needles. And I'd need to know his head measurement.

Well I'd like one to look as close to Jayne's as possible, so if I pay for all new materials would that be of help? If so I'll start looking locally asap, though I'll probably wait for X-Mas when I get my season DVDs so I can study the ep with Jayne's. Unless anyone has some really good pictures of it?

Rushlock, if you're willing to put up the money for the yarn, I'm sure I could find more exact colours. I can make a hat in a few days, so if you were really interested, I could have one for you before Christmas.

In fact, I will make it a point to go look for yarn tomorrow. There's a yarn store downtown that sells high quality bulky yarns rather than just the Red Heart acrylics I've been using. If you want authentic, I think I can accommodate.

And while I'm at the yarn store, I'll pick up size 1 needles so I can try my hand at itty bitty Jayne hats!

Oh, and there's one really good picture of Jayne in his hat that pops up here sometimes. In the top left corner. (Right now it's Book with his hair. Tee hee.)

very nice first attempt! I like your yarns.

I found my picture. I think I'll post it in the BSR. Check for it there.

I used yarns I found at a thrift store. It is an acylic/wool blend. There were several balls in a bag for $2.95. Since this was an experiment, I did not want to spend too much. I also added a thin strand of orange/rust mohair that I already had in hand to give it an even more homespun look.

Yeah, the red heart acrylics looked wrong to me too. That I why I scrounged for something more bulky. You could try using the WOOLEASE (Lion brand). In fact, that is in the red area on mine. It has little flecks of other colors in it...but not so much that it detracts from the overall look.

Very much interested CMS. Whenever it's convienent to do so, try to approximate a total cost, working from the angle that I'd like as close a replica as possible :) Even to it's flawed-ness :p (atleast I think I recall it being....less than perfect, but he (jayne) loved it anyway b/c it was from mom)

Once I know the price ballpark, I can figure out how/when I'll afford it.

Chindi, I bought weency tiny needles today so I can try my hand at mini hats. Can you measure your Jayne's head for me. Centimeters might be the best to work with. I need to know how big around his head is so I can figure out how big (well, small) to make the hat.

Thanks!

I used a linen alpaka yarn called "Savanna" that has a nice chucky and homespun look to it.

I got a great pattern for the hats if anyone needs one.

here's my hat

For those who've already made their Jayne hats--did you use a circular needle or double pointed needles? Just wondering

Using a circular needle. The instructions I found online said to use one, so thats what I bought.

Both. I started out with circular needles and then went to double pointed at the top when I started decreasing.

Double pointed needles seem scary, but really, they're not hard at all. And circular needles are the greatest invention in knitting ever. It really makes it easy. Just make sure you mark your starting point.

Cool--that's what I thought I'd do--start out with a circular and then go to double pointed. I've never used double pointed but I'm pretty sure I understand the comcept--they just look intimidating!

What size/length circular needle did you use?

And thanks for the info!

Question...didn't Jayne's have 'ear flaps' or whatever they're called?

I used a size 9 needle and only cast on 70 stitches so when the hat is on it points up on top. He's does has ear flaps and pretty bigs ones at that.

It depends on the yarn and size of the hat. But you look like you're using the same worsted weight acrylic style yarn I'm using. For a regular sized women's hat, I use a size 10 needle and cast on 64 stitches. For men's hats, I double the thread and use a size 11 needle. Same number of stitches. But each person knits differently, so check your gauge. Find what's right for you. Expect to have to rip out your first few tries. I ALWAY have to rip a project out at least once and try again. I've just come to expect it.
