So Whedon "officially" announced there would be no more sequels...when did this happen, after the DVD was released?

Okay, got to say this, take my beating by my fellow browncoats and move on. I love both Firefly and Serenity and I too very much regret the inability or lack of desire of the powers that be to effectively market this movie or this series. Like so many others, this universe is an unappreciated, undiscovered classic with an untapped potential audience.

But, Joss Whedon and his optomistic one day, pessimistic the next, can't take anything seriously other than his agreement about his own genius has gotten on my last nerve. He says nothing despite the fact that he's the wordiest celeb I've seen in a long time. Nothing is straight up, nothing for certain, is there hope or isn't there? Did massive DVD sales mean nothing? The film was released six months ago, it did okay, not great, but not bad either...if it all hinged on movie receipts why not announce then that it was over? Ah, but then we couldn't squeeze our audience for the DVD release, firing up the browcoats to buy 5, 10, or 20 copies of the movie thinking it was going to somehow contribute to the survival of the series. The DVD sales have been remarkable, number one on Amazon and still the best selling DVD out there but if that wasn't enough it's clear nothing would have been.

I guess in the end it's all about the cash. I would love to see this series continued on film or television or even in novel form but I'm getting tired of Joss Whedon.

Apologies to all the Whedon fans...maybe I just don't get the guy.

This is really sad news! No more movies? At the same time, I have a very hard time just giving up on this. C'mon! Do you think that Whedon could just GIVE UP?! I certainly don't. I refuse to give up hope in this 'verse. REFUSE! Do you hear me Mr. Whedon?
One upside I saw in this article is that Whedon mentions the possibility of ressurecting the show on television. This is what most of us want anyway, including myself.
He has built up such a fan base for this show, continually encouraged our encouragement, made us a gorram movie(!!!), and has told us--yes, TOLD us (more or less)--to keep hoping for more. Well, you know what, I'm gonna. I'm gonna keep hoping.

Wacky fun!

Joss has stated in several posts and online comments that he would be very interested in doing sequels of any kind if a studio is willing to. We have mentioned a couple of quotes from him in the past few episodes of 'Firefly Talk'. He is not saying he doesn't want to do any sequels just that based on the movie's revenues it is 'unlikely'. That decision is out of his hands.

The first paragraph of the Empire article refers to that damn EW article, the one Joss publicly refuted but just won’t die.

I do think it’s interesting that Joss is now publicly suggesting a continuation other than sequels (and he’s getting into specifics).

While I understand your frustration at the franchise's uncertain future, I can't say I understand your personal frustration with Joss.

I've read many, many of his recent interviews, and he has been very consistent in what he says. What you are seeing as inconsistancy is the spin that the various 'news' outlets are putting on his words (see EW).

Joss and TPTB aren't squeezing the Browncoats into buying multiple copies of the DVD by not holding the carrot of a sequel before us. It is love, in point of fact, that drives folks to buy multiple copies - not to keep, but to share something important to them with others.

Joss hasn't said anything definite because there is nothing definite to say. Would you rather he lie or make something up? It's just not in his hands. If the movie had grossed over 80 million, he would have had something definate to say. It didn't, so he doesn't. The DVD ranked #3 in sales the week of its release, and dropped 47% the next week, ranking #6 (see: http://www.videobusiness.com/topDVDSellers.asp ) - not what I would describe as "massive", and certainly not enough in and of itself to warrant any changes in the status of a sequel. IIRC, prior to the DVD sales figures' release, Chris Buchanan posted on the OB that whatever happens (if anything) based on DVD sales would be a slow process.

At this point in time the only definite thing that Joss could say is that it is over, done, caput - that he's not doing any of it anymore - because the only thing he is in control of is his own personal involvement and 'ownership' of the 'verse. Thankfully, he's not saying that (despite EW's infamous interpretation of the word 'closure'). After Firefly's cancellation, Joss needed to do more in the 'verse, and he personally was the sole driving force to make that happen. Serenity has met that unreasonable, burning need, and has left desire - desire to take on the job if someone offers, but not so much to make the job.

...Oh, and FYI, there will be another set of comics coming out (set before the movie) co-written by Joss and Brett Matthews, and at least two additional novels coming out, (though Joss's involvement in them is likely to be minimal).

Hey, at least that is certain. And I'm looking forward to it. Concerning any sequels to Firefly/Serenity...that article that was published today has an optimistic note to it (forgot the site, forgot the name - it is late).

With Firefly you never stop to worry.
We'll have to wait about 4-5 months...I guess there'll be definitve answers by then.
