PRINCESSROHANNEN

Greetings, all. Brand new here. I humbly apologize if this topic has been done before. Also, I'd like to grovel for a moment at the feet of those who have been browncoats since the original premiere of the show.

I'd never heard of the verse before I went and saw "Serenity." Things are of course different now. I've bought the movie and the series and have both pretty near memorized. I've been through all the special features and ... you guessed it ... I WANT MORE!!

Never have I been much for writing or reading fanfic and the like. As far as I'm concerned, if it didn't come from Mr. Whedon, it doesn't count. That leaves me with only one recourse while I wait for some more Josstory to come my way: a bit of idle discussion. (That and singing of the wonder that is Firefly to anyone who'll listen.)

So here's a little thing I've been speculating on: What if a new civil war got started in the verse? Say it's after the time of the movie. Say a bunch of citizens got angered up over the content of that broadcast. Say they took up arms to push the influence of the alliance out of their lives and to make each world independent and individual.

Sure, there'd be great big important sweeping social ramifications, but what I'm wondering is: Would Mal volunteer again? Do you think political independence is still important enough to him that he'd be willing to risk everything he has now? Or maybe he'd sign on just to take a little vengeance? Or is he content with things as they are? Maybe he'd figure that he's already got enough independence and it doesn't matter if the alliance acknowledges it?

This is a really good question!

I think Mal would be very conflicted, and a lot of his decisions would be influenced by just how realistic a chance the movement would have of actually succeeding.

He's been through a crushing defeat once and he's more than bitter about it.

"... a few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself..."

"I got no need to beat them. I just wanna go my way."

I think he really means those things. What he has seen of war burned any naivety or cock-eyed optimism out of him. Senseless carnage is not something he's looking to repeat.

These days, Mal tends to pick his battles carefully and he tends to put Serenity first.

Serenity is something he built and carved out of his soul, the family on it more so than the ship herself, so in my opinion it would take a very convincing case for him to jeopardize that by openly heading into a conflict again.

The heroics in "Serenity" are something of an exception because this was an acute emergency of "doing the right thing" with absolutely no one else to do it. And nothing much to lose, since they were being hunted viciously already.

Actual official war would be something else.

Now, aiding a movement in a less outright way, smuggling weapons and information and the like, that I can easily see Mal doing.
