Rant Time (Sorry)

Okay, everyone gets one, right? :)

Me, I'm a pretty green browncoat, here. When the series first started, I thought: "Hey, this looks like an original and interesting sci-fi show, I'll have to check it out." Caught Train Job when it first aired, but I somehow ended up thinking that I'd missed an earlier episode. (Wasn't till I was watching the interviews and such years later on DVD that I realized my gut feeling was right, even though technically I had actually seen what Fox had decided to air first.) Me, I got a thing about watching things out of order. Call it OCD if you will.

So here's what I figured: This is Joss Whedon, he's just coming off of Buffy pretty much, so he has a proven fan-base. I'll wait and catch the inevitable reruns when they show up. No need to catch the rest of them if I still haven't seen the first episode. I was pissed when I heard they'd cancelled it, but I'd only seen the one episode; plus I've got a tendency to get hooked on cancelled and/ or struggling shows previously. (Arrested Development, Wonderfalls...)

When the movie came out I knew I had to see it, but I work nights so I keep a confused schedule, and plus I don't much like the movie theatre experience. (Over-active bladder, too many rude people, etc.)

Finally rented Serenity, though. Hooked from the start. After the debacle that was the Star Wars sequels, Serenity was a breath of fresh air. Here was basically everything I had come to love in my sci-fi movies: witty writing, (Lucas can't write himself out of a paperbag and his worst decision ever was deciding to write his own dialogue this time around.) shiny special effects that don't scream SPECIAL EFFECT TAKING PLACE and take you out of the movie by trying to be over the top all the time, and characters that you actually feel something for. You know what I really loved about the original Star Wars? all the back and forth between the characters. Whedon has that down to a science, and for me it harkens back almost to the old black and white classics, where good writing was what made the movie.

Anyways, immediately went and bought both the DVD's and I've been working my way through them slowly, trying to savor it while it lasts. I'm doing about one a day, and relishing each and every once like a slice of really good cheesecake.

Here's the problem: I can't farkin get this show out of my head! Seriously. I'm having trouble concentrating on anything else. I'm usually a huge videogame addict, and I haven't even touched my XBox all week long. I just keep trolling the 'net searching for hopeful news of a comeback, any faint glimmer of hope.

I'd always heard about the dedication of the fans of this show, and I think I'm starting to see why. This thing has me hooked, and that the situation looks so grim doesn't help at all. One abortive season and one movie, and I can feel more for these characters than 3 of Lucas' extravaganzas.

On good days I like to fancy myself as something of an aspiring writer. After five harrowing years in art school, I made it out with a BFA in Sequentail Art, and a severe case of writer's block. I honestly haven't touched pen to paper in two years.

Seeing Serenity for the first time was truly, honestly, gorramn inspiring for me. I've actually started brushing the dust off of my pen set and revisiting some of my aborted projects, not to mention starting work on some new ones. It's not often something comes along that opens my eyes up to something special, and it's a gorramn shame that the people with the money can't always see that. (Did any of these Fox guys watch this show?)

I'm not saying that Whedon's the second coming of Shakespeare or anything, don't get me wrong. But I guess you could say he's my kind of stupid. :)

Firefly was one of those diamonds in the rough, a rare time when all the right people get together on the right show. There's just too much heart in that handful of episodes not to love it, and you can tell everyone involved felt the same way too.

Anyways, I just had to get that off of my chest. Sorry to hog up all the bandwidth, but I really needed somewhere to vent. Therapy, you might say :)

BTW, anyone know the official channels to send fan-mail to cast/ crew/ Whedon, etc? Not really expecting anyone to read anything I send, but still feeling the need to say thank you and stuff.

Also, here's to hoping that DVD sales can help matters for the fans. Seem to remember hearing that the box-office profits for the movie weren't the most inspiring in terms of bringing back the show. But I've also read numerous articles about how DVDs are taking over the theatre business (movies are definately starting to release on DVD earlier than ever now.) And we've already seen what effect good DVD sales can have on failed series. (Read Family Guy.)

So thanks to all you original true-blue browncoats out there, working hard, keeping the faith alive, and giving us newbies one Gorramn hell of a movie. Hopefully the reinforcements have arrived this time.

It's ok to rant now and then. It helps get some of the emotions you're bottling up out of you. Don't worry, we'll be back soon enough. Joss ain't givin' up just yet.

Welcome to the Browncoats, here you'll find plenty of people who feel the way you do. I know exactly what you mean when you say you can't get the show out of your head. I too am a somewhat new Browncoat (August '05). I remember Firefly when it first aired, but I only saw one episode and missed a few others, and when that happens, I tend to forget about the show because I feel I probably won't know what is going on. Little did I know I probably would have been perfectly fine considering the order the gorram idiots at Fox aired the episodes. Anyways, years passed and I see that there is going to be a movie based on Firefly called Serenity. I hear a lot of fans talking about how they can't wait, and after seeing the first trailer early last summer, i thought to myself, "maybe I should really check this out." then one day while checking my email at Yahoo, i see this little ad saying the SciFi channel will be airing Firefly. I thought it was perfect. I wanted to prepare for the movie and now SciFi was giving me my chance. I saw the Serenity pilot episode and the Train Job episode. I absolutely loved them. The following week I had to miss the next episode, and the same the next week. So I decided to go out and buy the series. I started watching them and fell in love more and more with each episode. Like you, i decided to take my time because I didn't want it to end. After Serenity came out and for weeks following that, they were the only things I could think about. (***Spoiler***) First of all, after seeing Serenity and loving it, I was so down on the deaths of Wash and Book. I couldn't believe the deaths of two fictional characters could effect me so much. I saw Serenity on opening day, and i spent the whole weekend just thinking about it and feeling so bad. After the movie i spent the next few weeks revisiting Firefly and while I love it, it felt so bad to know that such a great show never got a chance. The characters, the dialogue, the stories, they were all great. I had never seen a better cast of characters on TV. and so much memorable dialogue. I just couldn't believe that a show like this wasn't given a chance. It was almost driving my insane just thinking about it. I sometimes wished that I had never seen the show before because it was so hard to believe that it was gone. but like i've said many times, it is better to have loved and lost then to have never loved at all. I love Firefly, I enjoy every minute I spend with the movie and series, and in-turn, with the characters. all of us Browncoats keep moving on and the only thing we can do now is to try to spread the signal. show the movie and series to anyone who will watch. and if they don't want to watch it...FORCE THEM.

but yeah, i have never shown the series or movie to someone who didn't like it or love it. it is truely something special, and i feel sorry for those who haven't experienced it. i plan on watching the series this week with about 4 or 5 people who have never seen it before, so I'm hoping to recruit some more Browncoats this week. but like I said, we all know how you feel, and we're glad you're here.
