I'll confess up front that this is my fiance's blog, but I promise I only pimp it when it's browncoat-relevant, and he just gave Summer Glau his "sorely overlooked" award for a best supporting actress Oscar nomination, with absolutely no arm-twisting from me. (Not that I wouldn't have, but he didn't consult me, of course.)

Uh...best supporting actress?!?!?!?

She was the star of the film!!!

I've been saying all along she deserves not only a nomination, but the award for Best Actress this year. Her performance was nothing short of incredible. Even in the scenes where she had little or no dialogue, she nailed the part of a seemingly delusional, helpless, innocent victim --part "Rainman", part kick-butt action hero.

Overlooking Summer's performance in "Serenity" would be nothing short of criminal -- which is what I tend to expect from the powers-that-be in Hollywood, anyhow.

"You got any light to shed on this development?"

Yeah, the lead/ supporting role distinction is not always logical. For example, Heath Ledger is likely to get a best actor nomination, but Jake Gyllenhaal supporting actor? Any time there's anything close to an ensemble cast, which is what Serenity was, the chances are always better if you go for the supporting nom. I'd be thrilled to see Serenity nominated in any category, even if it's makeup or sound or something!

I just watched the DVD again of "Serenity". I wanted to see if my original accessment of Summer's performance was legitimate, and not just a brash overreaction of my initial 5-time viewing in the 3 days after purchasing the DVD, over a month ago.

If anything, the latest viewing has cemented my feeling that Summer warrants recognition for this role -- from the subtle facial reactions, to the extraordinary portrayal of abject sorrow, then the total change of character she experienced on Miranda when she declared, "I'm alright".

And don't forget, she could kick a guy backwards around a pole.

"Your sister's got some funny notions."
