When I watched that episode I straight away commented to my mate about the fact that the Alliance soldiers were wearing the uniforms from Starship Troopers.
At first I just took it as a money saving exercise for the production.
But given that there are any number of uniforms that could have been used, is it possible that Joss was using uniforms used by the facist state in Starship Troopers to dress his own facist state in Firefly?
Or am I seeing things that weren't there?
(Think I need councelling)

In the commentary for "The Train Job," Joss & Tim basically say it was a money-saving device. They gave the suits a somewhat different paint job to try and hide the similarity, but basically it's just what they could afford.

I do think it's an important point in general that Alliance troopers tend to be encased in intimidating suits of armor while what we've seen of the browncoats shows that they wore basically no armor beyond their helmets.

(And another side note: I find it interesting that in the flashbacks to the war, the Alliance troopers aren't wearing the Starship Troopers helmets but rather old style German coalscuttle helmets).

Think your reading a bit much in there. In the commentary they pretty much chalk it up to dollars. You've got to make some choices when filming on a TV budget.

I've not managed to watch them with the commentaries yet. Something I don't tend to do to be honest. But I might with these.

You really ought to watch the shows with the commentaries turned on as this is sometimes the best way to understand things in the 'verse. Also a tip... turn on closed captioning at the same time 'cause it lets you follow the dialog even when the commentators are talking over the show.

BTW, my favorite commentary, surprisingly is Shindig with War Stories a close second.

The sad part is not ALL of the episodes have commentary. I'd bet we see this in the "director's cut" or whatever they'll call the second release of the DVD set which you know they'll do after the $$$ they've made on it thus far.

I also recommend you watch the commentaries. Nobody gives a commentary like Joss Whedon, insightful, entertaining, funny; you walk away feeling that you've learned a great deal while at the same time being highly entertained. You'll enjoy the 'verse in a whole new way afterwards.

Plus, if you don't watch the commentaries, you'll never learn about the "Inara's secret" question that's one of the things we're all desperate to find out in a sequel.

Definitley watch these commentaries. I usually don't either, but the commentary with Nathan and Joss on the pilot is unparalleled.

The commentary is very amusing. To paraphrase...

Joss: A lot of people have come to me saying that the Alliance uniforms look an awful lot like the uniforms from Starship Troopers. That's because the Alliance uniforms are the uniforms from Starship Troopers.

Nobody could be so honest about it all {^^}. He and Nathan Fillion have a good laugh about it. KF

Lord, I'm walking your way. Let me in, for my feet are sore, my clothes are ragged.
Look in my eyes, Lord, and my sins will play out on them as on a screen. Read them all.
Forgive what you can and send me on my path. I will walk on until you bid me rest.
