When I watched Earl last week I couldn't help but notice the two prison guards who search Earl and Randy are wearing bright blue gloves, very similar to those worn by River's little friends. I started to yell "two by two, hands of blue!" at the TV. Yes, it's official, I've slipped over the edge!

Jayne: I once hit a guy in the neck from 500 yards with a bent scope. Don't that count upstairs?
Book: Oh, it'll be taken into consideration.
Jayne: You made that sound kind of ominous.

The blue gloves cops (and some emergency workers)
wear are more resistant to chemicals than latex or
vinyl. I always thought the blue glove guys were
the hokiest part of Firefly, but hmmm... thinking
about it, It's kinda even more creepy! Cops usually
patrol in pairs...

Usually the blue gloves are nitrile, and in addition to being more resistant to some chemicals, they are also tougher than latex. Plus, they're good for people with latex allergies. Our research stockroom recently switched to bright pink nitrile gloves and now I wish I'd saved a couple blue pairs!

FYI, blue gloves like the ones used in the show are usually made of nitrile or a combination of nitril and latex. I use these in my DIY projects as they have a high resistance to a variety of solvents and they are a bit harder to pierce with sharp objects (although I did manage once to get a nasty cut through a pair). Not totally relevant to this thread but thought y'all might find it interestin' to know a bit more about the source of these gloves. Oh, and I wouldn't bother bidding on a pair of such gloves should they come up on ebay or elsewhere My source is HarborFreight.com or the local Home Depot.
