If you like Mal, you should check out the Star Trek, New Frontier series written by Peter David. The captain of the USS Excalibur, Mackenzie Calhoun, actually led his people to victory over an alien opressor in a bloody war. He became a folk hero before enlisting in Starfleet. And whoa, does he have a temper on him! Plus, he's good in a fight, and downright hysterical.

In short, he's what Mal might have been had he won the war.
