I dont know if anyone else has posted this (or will find it intersting) but...

"Saffron is a spice derived from the flower of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus), a species of crocus in the family Iridaceae. [It is] often dried and used in cooking as a seasoning and colouring agent [and] has for decades been the world's most expensive spice by weight.
Saffron is characterised by a bitter taste and an iodoform- or hay-like fragrance; these are caused by the chemicals picrocrocin and safranal. Saffron also has medicinal applications.

I think the name was most likely based on hair color, and the rest of the info, though illuminating, is just coincidental "gravy" for those who like to tease symbols out of their entertainment.
