Being new and all i dont know that much about Serenity and Firefly. But iv been reading around and stuff and i read somewhere about Firefly that they made 15 episodes but theres only 14 on the box set does this mean that the 15th episode is actually just Serenity thats an extended episode type thing (or am i just getting totally mixed up) Plus i was a bit annoyed about the box set actually (but in a good way) the first episode was an hour and 20 mins long and the rest were only 40 mins long i was really hoping all of them would be as long as the first.

Also what does BDM stand for?

serenity with time for commericals was the 2 hour pilot

the other with time for commericals were the 1 hour episodes

Yeah the first episode in the Firefly DVD box set is the pilot episode meant to run within 2 hours but without commercials is a lot shorter! The rest of the episodes are standard run time (without those gorram commercials).. and there are only 14 episodes.. including that very first pilot episode..
The Serenity movie is separate.

It would have been great if Firefly was given a chance to at least have a complete first season!!! And more!

There was an unaired pilot. But it's just an alternate version of the 2 hour pilot we did get to see.

Whoops

I see that SHINY1 has already answered the BDM question. I'd like to address BDM a little further.

Just came across this not long ago in the "Safe" eps. At the very end Simon and River are about to be burnned at the stake by a clan of hillfolk who have come to believe that River is a witch.
Just before the torch is lit Serenity flies over and Jayne leans out sporting a weapon that he is ready to use on the backwater bargade. Mal and Zoey come trumping out of the bush and somewhere in there Zoe delivers the line "Big Damn Heros". Now it has bcome a fave fan quote and spawn all kinds of children BDM,BDW(weapon).......BDA(anything)

Its quite fun to use the dialog from the movie or series in everyday real world situations. People wonder sometime what the heck I think is so funny when I spout one of these little jems. I just smile and will be happy the day I say "Shiny" and the other person will smile back at me and say " That was a great BDM."

To answer your question about whether there are 14 or 15 eps:

The pilot episode "Serenity" was split into two separate parts when it aired on tv. There are only 14 episodes, but due to this circumstance, people sometimes mistakenly claim that there are 15 episodes.

P.S. - Oh, btw, you may come across the term BDH's. This stands for big damn heroes, meaning the actors that play our favorite tv characters.
