Checking around for digital content providers and turned up this website:
http://www.cinemanow.com/pmc/

Check about halfway down the page, and you'll find their Top 5 movies. Take a 'wag' (wild-assed guess) what movie is sitting at number 2 on the list, some five months after its initial DVD release...

Reading the customer reviews is kinda neat, too. It's so cute when people discover the 'verse for the first time. Reminiscent of the look on a kid's face the first time he tastes chocolate... And it looks like they're all unbiased, novice reviews, too. The reviewers are genuine 'virgins'; there's not a single rabid fanboy/gurl manifesto on the site (which is good; some folks don't like being evangelized).

Respectfully,

zoid

Thank you Zoid, went and read the reviews as well and they were all nice and you could tell not fangirly/boy-y. Yea.

Nice to see our movie getting some exposure.

Hope some new folks come into the 'verse because of the reviews and watching it.

I agree--in fact, I find most folks don't like being evangelized. I read or heard somewhere (maybe in my brief Toastmasters days) that the less emotional you seem, the more likely you are to persuade someone of an opposing viewpoint. Not that FF/S virgins are necessarily of an opposing viewpoint, but it's definitely difficult to get someone interested in watching something they've never heard about, so I would think it applies. :)

...More than anything else, I think people respond negatively to irrational fanaticism. Take your stereotypical Star Wars or Star Trek 'geek', for example. Even if their movie is something so odious that you would normally flush twice, spray air freshener and light candles, they still defend it to the death.

Then, when the next installment comes out, the fangurls/boys come out in full force on opening day, raving about its cinematic genius. Nobody believes them, because that's exactly what they said about Attack of the Clones (did I say that out loud?) ...erm, I mean, 'the previous release'.

Star Wars survived this fandom menace (pun intended); but it's fair to say that it killed the Star Trek franchise (along with some generally horrific storytelling). The uninitiated movie consumers ('straights', I call them) would like to see something different at the theatre. But having a battalion of Browncoats invade a website every time it barely whispers 'Firefly', just looks like more of the same. The aforementioned 'straights' wind up avoiding "Serenity" because they think it's gonna suck as bad as Star Wars/Trek, based solely on the shared rabidity of the fans.

On the other hand, if you're writing letters to Universal, NBC, F*x, SciFi, the WB, et al, the more fanatical the author appears to be, the better. Those guys want you to be ga-ga over the show, regardless how bad it is.

Of course, this is all academic. As every one knows, we Firefly Fans may be ardent, but we are not irrational. Our love for Firefly/Serenity is fully justified and there is no praise we may heap upon it that is too lofty.

But the straights don't know that. Yet. They can get skittish if they associate our ardor with Star Wars/Trek geeks' irrational fanaticism.

So, it's nice to see the site I linked above, as yet unspoiled by pro- or anti-Firefly evangelists. It's nice to see unbiased opinions -- in the main positive -- being expressed by folks who watched the movie, who were introduced for the first time to our beloved 'verse, and who fell in love with it.

They don't even know River's name ("this little bitty chick was kicking major butt"). How precious is that? That's an affirmation of our belief in this Joss Whedon created universe...

Respectfully,

zoid
