I might be dumb for not having noticed this before but I suppose that they're are still plenty of Browncoats you didn't get this reference. On The Beatles White Album there is a song near the end titled "Cry baby Cry" and if that wasn't obvious enough for me to notice actually listening to the lyrics while not doing homework helped me to pick up on the refrain:

Cry Baby Cry
Make your mother sigh
Shes old enough to know better

Anyone else know this? Am I awesome for finding it or lame for just now realizing it?

I haven't listened to any of The Beatles' music lately, so I didn't get it. Anyway, do you think Joss is a Beatles fan?

Qouting them in his TV show might be a good sign that hes a fan, but chances are he just thought it was really funny to conceal a line from a beatles song in the pilot of his scifi western tv show.

Yes, the Beatles rock. Literally. :)
I think that 'the younger generations' just don't know the Beatles music. I mean, really, I was post-Beatles generation, but my parents and my older brothers were fans so I had exposure.

In another ten years he could have used a Guns N Roses or New Kids lyric and only us 'old fogies from the 80's' would get it.

I had the same epiphone in on a family road trip. My dad stuck in that CD full blast and that song came on right as I was falling asleep.

"Cry Baby CrY"

and my ears perked up.

I've also read somewhere that Joss said something like the Beatles songs etc will be popular in the future too.

Something like that...

Huh. Didn't realize this until now. But thanks for bringing it up.

For a while, I was thinking that my whole "River playing rock music" subplot that went through BLUE HAND BLUES and YCGHA were a bit out of character. But after that little nugget, I'm guessing it would be in character. Heck, Joss is always trying to bring music into everything he does, I'm sure River rocking out might have been something he'd do.

There was a thread about this a while back. Some of the Browncoats from the Beatles generation said it never occured to them that someone wouldn't pick up the Beatles reference. I didn't get it, myself. I think it's just a generational thing. My parents just went to San Antonio and saw the Alamo. When I asked if they toured the basement they didn't get the joke, but my brother and all my friends did. It's nice to know that there's something in Firefly for everyone.

Book: Oh, it'll be taken into consideration.
Jayne: You made that sound kind of ominous.

HAHAHA!

OMG, you and I are seriously connected at the brain or something.

I was riding my bike home and listening to the song, cause it's funny...and in my head Serenity turned yellow and submarine like and grew 4 windows ...and some of the crew were bobbing their heads to the music (which you could see through the windows.)

Then I got ripped back into reality when I almost rode past my house...lala land is both a blessing and a curse...why can't I stop visiting?

And AERIN: I'm fairly certain that was probably me...

I was listening to the Beatles when I was like, 11 or 12... Always was way out of sync with any of my peers. So, yeah, I got that ref as soon as I heard it. Made me kind of "twinge" out of the 'Verse -- while it would be cool for people to still be listening to music 500 years old, I found it kinda unbelieavble, and Wash's comment jarred me a bit. But I figured (maybe like Joss) that only us kids from the 60s and 70s would get the ref. I'm old enough to know better...

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

You know, the close caption even says "quoting lyrics" when they do those lines. Which is actually a little annoying, but still.
I bet the Beatles would be, you know, classical music for them 500 years in the future. Classical music combined with classical poetry that everyone studied in school or something and can reel off when it's appropriate. I mean, what better phrase to say "turn on the gorram crybaby signal and save us!" than a cool piece of classical music? I thought it worked wonderfully well. I admit it took my a moment to place the song, as it had been years since I'd heard it, but I knew it was a song.

A while back and this was a while back, I read that in 'Trash' orginally Mal and Saffron were supposed to steal a Beatles album (may have been Revolver). But the rights to show it on screen were too expensive so Joss and co went with stealing a laser gun.

I've never seen this confirmed by Joss and Tim but I would love to know if it was true.

Me too!!! That would have been way cooler than a laser gun that doesn't work. Yet another way the studio system screwed over the greatest scifi show ever.

I admit I didn't get the reference, but i'm gonna to go find that song.

Love the idea of the priceless Beatles album as an Earth-That-Was artefact, that would have been great and might even have enticed my dad to watch the show lol!

How many songs do we all know that were composed over 200 years ago? You'd be surprised. Little bits of classical music are still very well known today, even if we just know how the tune goes rather than the name of the symphony or who composed it.

I'm not going to compare The Beatles to Mozart or Beethoven, but I think its highly possible that a Beatles song could be known to lots of people that far into the future.

It's on the white album. One of the essential recordings of rock and roll.
