So, now that Buffy is finished and Firefly is looking like it could become a big screen feature... I was wondering, "what will Joss's future look like?"

I would like to see Joss succeed in movies. But not in the conventional way. Think about it... Joss is 'above' doing movies. He's made 44 hours worth of TV per year for the past four years. Doing a 2 hour movie isn't going to be very fulfilling for him, is it?

I would like to see Joss change the face of movies. He's done it for TV. For the past two decades movies have been getting bigger and bigger. More and more expensive. More effects driven and less character driven. Joss needs to change this. He can.

Joss's shows are all character driven, but they are still very well crafted and use big-screen quality special effects on limited bugets. Why couldn't he translate this to movies? Instead of making a Firefly feature film with a buget of $75 millon, make it for $10 million. Make it a GREAT story.

This way we could be assured of success. If Joss gets pulled into the big-buget trap of Hollywood he could be destroyed. Does anyone really believe that a big-screen Firefly movie could make $100 million? Ratings were only in the 4-5 million range when the show was on. If they make a big-budget film they need to get big returns. Make a lower-buget film and it will be profitable. I have no problem believing that Firefly coud make $40 million at the theatre.

Same with Buffy. It will never be a big money maker. Am I wrong?

By doing low-budget movies Joss could crank them out once a year or so and keep a tight, ongoing story. Thats what I want. Thats what he's a master of.

So, I ask... what do you guys think we'll see in the future? Whos going to win... Joss or Hollywood?

Perhaps Joss is the man who could successfully bring back serials!

A new 30-40 min Firefly episode/movie in the theater every two weeks. Play them before the main feature instead of those freakin' TV commercials they show now.

That'd be nice. I like the trailers better than the movies themselves, but TV commercials? Why do they do that. A theater is no place to be advertising soda and cars and stuff. Though, some people may not be too happy about watching some other show they don't know before their movie. Or maybe you mean before people sit down to watch the movie, like a transition? But that would be expensive for the movie theater people...

Boy, do I love the idea of a reasonably-budgeted Firefly movie. That makes it sound like something that could actually be done. I wonder about the feasibility of a movie anyway, but the idea of a story-driven, reasonably priced film (keeping the studio at bay, perhaps) is very appealing.

Francis Ford Coppola once said that he wanted to make "Bram Stoker's Dracula" for less money and have it be more experimental and theatrical. He likened making a big-budget movie to drawing with a 500-foot pencil; in the end, all you can draw is a picture of Mickey Mouse.

Nobody else should hold Joss' little pencil. Um, so to speak...

You would know about it, if it's like the old days. Now we have a movie. In the '40s, I'm told, there really was a "feature-length" "feature presentation," preceded by a movie short, a cartoon, and newsreels of World War Two/etc. Probably all for 25 cents, too.

I don't know if that would work today, with attention spans getting shorter and--

What was I talking about?

A $10M budget would be too small. I think $30M would be good and safe.

I just don't want to see Joss go the way of Chris Carter. He could easily get drown in the business that is Hollywood. Whatever happens, one thing is for sure... the next couple of years will be crucial.

In hindsight, I almost wish things had played out a bit different this year and maybe last year... Joss should have kept his focus on Buffy until the end, then start Firefly. Three shows is two too many for one guy to focus on. I wonder if Firefly would have had a better chance if it started this fall instead of last fall. With Buffy being over and the hype factor would have been much bigger... and Joss could've focused solely on FF.
