Hi everyone! I'm a newb. Now that that's out of the way...

It's been so amazingly fantastically shiny to watch these threads the last couple of days and really watch this thing take shape right in front of my eyes. A pony and a little plastic rocket to all of you....

I am the instigator of the San Diego screening of Serenity on the 23rd (just contacted cantstoptheserenity.com to get us added to the list) Everyone's enthusiasm and belief in this project made me believe that I had to do something if there was to be a screening here (after the amazing fanlove at ComiCon it would be a crime for San Diego not to be on the list considering ComiCon was, um, here and all)

I wanted to know: will SerenityJune23rd.com openly promote the screenings as well as the DVD purchases? I just automatically assumed that everything would be tied together but after combing through some of these other threads it hasn't been stated definitively. Many have mentioned the screenings- go see one or organize one, but are we specifically joining the two together?
I know that cantstoptheserenity.com states that they will make no official comment on any other efforts being made on the 23rd but I think it would be a benefit to everyone to bring these projects together under one umbrella.

After all, we're all Browncoats and we're all working towards the same goal: bring back our beloved 'verse.

It seems to me that the two best strategies are money and publicity and since I can only afford to buy a certain number of DVDs, I want us to make this thing as big as possible. (Then others can find out about it and spend some money)

With the marking materials we are going to use here (flyers, press releases, t shirts) I think it would be great to print on them one website (SerenityJune23rd.com) that someone will go to and not only see the entire effort worldwide but also find out what they can do and what's going on at the local level (i.e. the movie screening in their own neighborhood) I think this would also make someone feel as though they can really do something and be a part of the bigger picture.

Really what I want is to get this idea out and to get some feedback. Is this feasible? How does everyone feel about this?

Aside from some minor differences, it seems like everyone has really come together and this effort belongs to all of us. This is our 'verse. We HAVE done the impossible and that makes us mighty.

... but isn't it called Serenity Day and the page http://serenityjune23rd.com? That's the same page on there? I'm confused... again.

And yeah, I'm all for EVERYONE working together. That's the REASON for the ONE ARMY in our slogan, gorramnit! This is supposed to be one huge combined effort where everyone supports everyone. What happened to contacting the webmasters of other fansites? I know there's a list with about 4 dozen around somehwere, did anyone actually CONTACT them?

Hey Agatsu

We're working on it! Contacting the webmasters is BIIIG...FollowMal n' me are compiling lists of sites and Jana (I think) is typing up some sexily suave letters to send to them. So it is happening. 'Fact, while I'm here, might as well plug this: Everyone send any sites/forums etc. that might be interested to rachel_mccrum@hotmail.com or followmal@gmail.com. The more the merrier!

Hey OurMrsTightPants (nice name!),

Re the screenings/DVD co ordination: I think the plan is still promote mass DVD buying (cos EVERYONE can do it)and then anything anyone wants to do with screenings is fabulous, fantastic, encouraged and pretty much independent. But will be compiled to show the scale of it.

Talk to General Kaele! Or see her posts! She's da boss!

We would love to coordinate with the Can't Stop the Serenity project, but the people in charge over there do not seem to be interested at present. We will try to contact them.

The SerenityJune23rd.com website will be the umbrella site for the entire Serenity Day project. There is at least one webdesigner working on it. The site will have updates on our publicity campaigns, as well as plenty of marketing materials such as posters, postcard designs, and banner ads available for download. The visuals crew is also working on t-shirts, bumper stickers, magnets, and buttons. If anyone has any ideas regarding promotional products, please contact me (PMs through this site are fine).

I think its a good idea to try and set up screenings, as hard as it may be.

I also think advertising is the way to go. Taking out an add in the paper, or bumper stickers, or more shirts, or a Screening will just get people to notice.

We need something like the "star wars lines" to get us noticed by the press. Even if it is as stupid as that, its something. Only problem is we dont have Lightsabers, and Stormtrooper outfits to look retarded in.

Maybe if we all dressed like Blue Sun Agents, with the gloves and such, and Carried a Blue Sun flag, or banner around town looking strange, all on the same day? Maybe thats a little extreme. That would certainly get us noticed though. Or not.

I think the best idea would be to just buy 4 Serenity DVDs and give them out to people who might like them, and tell them to pass it on. That would be over 100 bucks from each of us, which i can not afford at the moment but would certainly consider doing on the 23rd.

You could also use them to give away as a way to get people to the screenings.

Maybe some of these are silly or redundant, but just a couple thoughts......

Heh. My town is wierd enough that I bet I could do all of that AND sing Hero of Canton at the top of my lungs and nobody would even notice.

Yes- we need one central planning site- all other websites should link to it on their front-page.

Wait? Did someone just say "Can't Stop the Serenity" isn't behind us on this???? We need them!

Yes, they go to the same page, but you can unconfuse yourself and just forget about the fireflyday.com - while it prevailed orginally it looks like it sank like a stone after a second voting.

THEONETRUEBIX

There are a number of reasons I have that mild disclaimer on the CSTS website. But one of them -- and it's actually a concern I first had expressed to me by some people who are on board with the Serenity Day thing, not something I first expressed to them -- is that I've been working on the screenings plan since the end of December. The word some of these people expressed to me was a concern over Serenity Day having "hijacked" a day that had been in play already for 3 1/2 months.

As someone who has put much work into the screenings proposal, one concern of mine is that people will erroneously think that Serenity Now/Equality Now is a part of Serenity Day, and was inspired by it, when that isn't the case.

The other issue, for me, is that I've spent three months now very deliberaely cultivating one important point about the screening proposal: It is NOT just about Browncoats triyng to get something for themselves. Yes, fans get the benefit of seeing it on the big screen again, and new fans get the benefit to do so for the first time. But most importantly, Joss' favorite charity gets the benefit of fundraising done on his birthday.

The screenings plan was about projecting Browncoat enthusiasm OUTWARD into the world, not INWARD towards trying to get more Serenity.

In the main, those are the reasons I've been reticent to link the screenings effort to anything else.

(Of course, it's none of my business if individual organizers hosting screenings want to link the events together. After all, the entire point of the screenings is there's no central authority controlling these events -- it's all grassroots, on the ground.)

Thanks for that clarification, Bix. I totally understand where you're coming from.

The charity screenings, while backing up our purpose with Serenity Day, should stand on their own as a charity event for Equality Now.

We just need to rethink our advertising so that other people understand that. I was just worried that you weren't backing up the Serenity Day plan, and that had me a mite concerned. All is shiny.

I posted this on the can't stop the serenity yahoo group, but I thought I should share it here. Not that my opinion is important or anything.

I agree, these events have two different purposes.

There is no reason why they cannot support each others efforts in promotion, as long as it is indicated that they are separate and concurrent events. Maybe each website can sport a banner for the other.

THIS is the thread I needed to find!!! I've been chasing this debate all over!

I was very concerned that we were hijacking the Serenity Now/Equality Now events. I think that might even have been my phrase. I still am, a little. I think there's a really good potential for charity screenings, if people are prepared to put the work into researching Equality Now and make a genuine connection between the movie and the charity, and if Bix and the other Serenity Now organisers want us to.

OR...

We do keep everything completely separate...although it could get a little confusing. I'm confused already.

Can all these aims i.e. showing level of support (MIGHTY!)/introducing new fans/promoting Equality Now exist in the same space?

See, I reckon they can. But we need to know NOW what the powers that be reckon, and get the marketing adjusted accordingly. Reconciliation of some sort, otherwise it's all confusion and possible bad feeling. Which I really, really don't want.

Love to y'all

I thought this was a common effort - we help them, they help us. But yeah, I've been thinking that it might be considered hijacking.
How about they put a flyer up on their website for download, and we put one into each of the Serenity DVDs we give away. Plus we put their url on the crossings ("Look where I've been!") - thingie as well.
It might even look like THEY are giving away DVDs for free, which in turn makes them look mighty shiny and people more willing to donate.
I'm sure the notion of Serenity Day motivated a lot of Browncoats to organize and promote Charinity Now screenings, btw.

As long as everybody's happy, I will be too.

Keep your sig, it's beautiful. The site www.serenityjune23rd.com is moving forward, getting stronger everyday. The new forum is yet to be tested with any real force but it's almost there, and a real web designer/web master has been flown in to take the operation forward. May God have mercy on their soul
My understanding and my hopes are that part of the www.serenityjune23rd.com site will be to make every effort to inform all visitors about ALL the positive activities happening on that day, especially the ones originated much earlier by the folks (OTB et al) at http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/

THEONETRUEBIX - I confess that even though I haunt, uh, visit these boards frequently, I was completely unaware of the charity screenings you guys had organized and subsequently of the main charity http://www.equalitynow.org/ altogether.
It is because of this crazy idea being discussed here that I found your site and then http://www.equalitynow.org/ site and learned a great deal more. I'm guessing that my example is just one of many, that the serenityjune23rd.com efforts can only help your efforts. At least I see no reason why that can't happen - you have a great site and a great message and as you know b-coats are givers. I'm sure you will see a lot more people wanting to help you out or create their own charity screenings because of the ruckus being made over the coordinated dvd buy, etc., and that seems like a really good thing, doesn't it?

I apologize if this is long-winded, but it’s from the heart

I am so glad that you posted your disclaimer. For the past two days I have been thinking this over and over and I believe in my heart that I agree with your feelings on the matter.
You started the campaign to bring people in many cities worldwide together for a noble cause, something selfless- to use something that we all love to help other people. And that’s awesome, really really shiny.

I even printed out your disclaimer and brought it to my planning committee because I wanted to make sure that we as a group agreed on why we are doing this. As a group we feel that we’re putting on a screening for a wonderful charity, and that’s how we are going to promote it. (And let’s face it: we don’t have to put a hard sell on any fans of the Firefly ‘verse. They’ll come. And they’ll get an exciting fan event in the name of something greater for the community)
Now that’s not to say that I’m not interested in the other event that’s taking place. After all, the SerenityJune23rd project is how I initially found out about the cantstoptheserenity site (and without all the stir that’s been going on around it I probably wouldn’t otherwise have known about it until too late). I think uniting people worldwide to buy DVDs on the same day is an exciting mission, but it’s separate. The tones of the two campaigns are very different. Serenity Now/Equality Now is a giving enterprise, asking for nothing in return. (except maybe for collecting a few new fans who may not have previously been exposed to the ‘verse ) The other event is asking to get more of the Firefly ‘verse (which I’ll admit I want as well *blush*).

And if called to action for either campaign I believe that I could work hard for both. But you represent the united effort to show Serenity in the name of charity and with your publicly stated stand on the issue I intend to uphold the giving spirit of Serenity Now/Equality Now. As a planner of a charity screening, giving something back to the community in the name of Serenity is my number one focus and a cause that’s dear to my heart.

I don’t think you really wanted to have to write this disclaimer but I’m very glad you did. You helped clarify the matter for those who didn’t quite understand before why these two events should be kept separate. (I’ll admit that I was a little confused before but I get it now) It’s also good that you’ve made your entirely charitable intentions known publicly because chances are that these two events will be linked together in the public and the media.

This must be a very hard position for you to be in because regardless of your stand on SerenityJune23rd, it came well after and from a different intent. Even if you absolutely love the idea of gathering people to buy the DVD it doesn’t change what you originally set out to do. I feel very torn because I want to participate in both but my heart tells me that giving to the community comes first. Likely the tremendous efforts of Serenity Now/Equality Now will cause strangers to this ‘verse to investigate the movie and the series and want to know more about the amazing fans who would go to such great lengths to help so many.

And yes, when June 23rd comes around I will be buying copies of Serenity and Firefly but for my part I’m not going to join the two efforts into one campaign. I am excited about both… as separate entities.
