SIRIUS

Ok, so I've been thinking awhile about Mal and his past. And I have come up with some theories (sorry if these have already been thought of).

Ok so we learn a LOT about his character through the very first two episodes. Serenity and The Train Job. We learn that he fought for his beliefs against Unification and that possibly each planet had its own government like countries today intstead of that the U.N. sort of is. We also know that Mal doesn't like the alliance, but why did he volunteer with the Independents?

In Our Mrs. Reynolds, Saffron gets Mal talking about his past which he never mentions and why is that? My guess is that something traumatic happend to him such as the Alliance taking his farm, killing his mother, etc etc. Sort of like the Owen and Beru Lars for all the original Star Wars fans out there. We get some feeling that there is some truth behind this since Mal states that the Commander of the alliance ship in Bushwhacked really doesn't know his feelings concerning the alliance. Now onto his morals.

Mal doesn't like to kill unlike Jayne who will kill a man in a fair fight, or if he thinks he's about to start a fight, or if there's a woman. The only instances that I can think of where Mal actually does kill someone is Dobbson (which we later find out he doesn't), possibly Early, Crow of Claw I don't know his name (Niska's bodyguard) and even as Mal pushes him into the engine, the look on his face after doing that is one of disgust like he despises himself for doing that. And the guy from the bank in Serenity as an act of mercy. Even after being tortured etc etc he doesn't kill Niska, the Operative, Atherton, Ranch Burgess. And there is probably some more I forgot. But perhaps Mal doesn't like to kill since if he kills, he thinks himself as turning into the alliance which we know he doesn't like. The alliance kills and has no regard for life, only for those that bend to their will.

Lastly is he take on faith. He had faith in Serenity Valley but then lost it once his commanders abandoned him and the survivors there for an additional 3 weeks. He felt that god had left him there to die alone. Where was his saviour then in his time of need? Mal keeps a short leash on Book reminding him constantly that he is allowed on his boat but god ain't. Yet, Mal begins seeking advice and comfort from Book at Haven which is a completely change of course from when we first see him.

I know this isn't totally complete but I just had to write this down before I forgot it all. Cheers!
